The brand-new new music thread

You guys need to check out The Lord Weird Slough Feg. Don't know if I've ever brought them up here, but this is seriously the best trad metal/true metal ever. San Fran has one of the best metal scenes going if you know where to look (Fucking Champs, Weakling, Hammers of Misfortune, and on and on and on...)

The new Witchery smokes. New Frightmare is good, not as great as the last one.

fz you like the still life. lol
ps what you think of those two disks before I drop the green?

The Torture Killer is along the lines of SFU (Barnes is the throat on this disc). The Sword, I have not listened to the whole disc yet. But, from what I've heard on Music Choice it's kinda sludgy/stoner metalish.

FZ, how is that If Hope Dies album? I checked out a couple tracks by them since I might see them supporting Still Remains on tour, and they sounded decent.

My latest:
Amorphis - Eclipse
Bullet for My Valentine - The Poison

I also got The Poison a couple weeks ago. Not bad.
That If Hope Dies is awesome. I am loving that CD. Songs will begin to sound similar to one another after a bit, though.

Cannibal Corpse - Kill
Lacuna Coil - Our Truth
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime 2

Lacuna Coil? This is unlike the mighty powerslave.

Word on the street is that Queensryche is complete garbage.

What? I bought Lacuna Coil's last cd after seeing them at Ozzfest. Plus, even I need some easy listening music every once and a while.

After one play of the Queensryche cd, the word on the street is correct.

I wouldn't have pegged you for a Lacuna Coil fan. :)

Cristina Scabbia is rather cute.

I need some new music. Shit.

i dont like lacuna coil at all. is dream theatre good?

From an unbiased standpoint ... they're decent.

Some love 'em, some hate 'em. Some think their musical ability is brilliant. Others call it masturbation.

I guess if you're into prog-metal you should at the very least appreciate the band.

i'm still waiting to lose my virginity and these pictures aren't helpin :)
just need the correct blind, crazy candidate species.

I need some new motherfucking music still.

I guess I can mention some downloads I've acquired recently:

Shadows Fall - Fallout From the War.
Quick review: If their last Century Media release is a sign of things to come, I am NOT looking forward to their major label debut.

Tool - 10,000 Days.
Finally got a copy. Yeah, it's good music and all, but a lot of you need to stop jerking off to the band.

Men Women and Children - S/T.
Haven't actually gotten this, but I saw them last week opening for 30 Seconds to Mars, and while it's not the best music you'll hear, it's the most goddamned catchy crap I've heard in a long time. Very 80s new wave/electro-ey shit. I'm gonna buy it if I can find it used cheap. <---- This paragraph: Least metal thing I've ever said.

Isn't this leftovers from "The War Within"? It's just a contract obligation, maybe the next one will be up to par.

Yeah, it's been kinda slow. The only things I can thing of that have come out recently that I want are the new Evergrey and Witchery.

powerslave said:

Yeah, plus re-recordings of old stuff or something.

Some of the songs really blow though.

That's not good to hear.

I liked War Within, but not as much as Of One Blood or Art of Balance. I'd hate to see them keep going downhill.

Flah said:
I really see no hope for Shadows Fall. They peaked with Of One Blood.

I think they peaked with Art of Balance. Bringing in Bittner on drums was a big improvement.

But I won't argue that Of One Blood was a damn good album too. "Crushing Belial" is still my favorite song by them.

An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess
The Best of Van Halen, Volume One
Atomship - The Crash of '47

Went for an eclectic mix of stuff this time.

Jorn - The Duke

This is awesome. Fans of 80s metal need this. Perkele should check this out. Burning Chains is great.

Satyricon - Now, Diabolical
Terror 2000 - Terror for Sale
Shadows Fall - Fallout from the War

Flah said:
Does the guy from Soilwork still sing for Terror 2000?

I believe so. The sticker on the wrapper said there was a member from Soilwork.

Shadows Fall - Fallout from the War

If Hope Dies - Life in Ruin

Scar Symmetry - Symmetric in Design

All That Remains - Fall of Ideals

The Shadows Fall album is OK. There are a few good tracks, but no real standouts. Overall it was a little disappointing.

I haven't made it all the way through If Hope Dies, but so far it's pretty decent.

The Scar Symmetry album is damn good. It's probably the best melo-death buy since Callenish Cirlce's "Flesh_Power_Dominion"

The All That Remains album is amazing. I really like "This Darkened Heart", but "Fall of Ideals" is even better. These guys are among the best in the genre, and 1 band of a few handfulls in metalcore that really are a must listen. It's nice to see the drumming really step-up on this album too.

All that Remains - The Fall of Ideals
Beyond Fear - S/T
Bolt Thrower - Those once Loyal
Cattle Decapitaion - Karma Bloody Karma
Cellador - Enter Deception
Speed\kill\hate - Acts of Insanity
The Acacia Strain - The Dead Walk
Witchery - Don't Fear the Reaper

Slayer - Christ Illusion
Artimus Pyledriver - S/T
Unearth - III: In the Eyes of Fire

new slayer fucking kicks ass, slayer is the heaviest and fastest mainstream band on the fucking planet after 25 fucking years.

new LoG was dissapointing though, i dont like thier new sound, palaces and ashes were way more brutal IMO

Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death

Hatebreed - Supremacy

Haven't posted here in awhile, so here's the new stuff I've gotten over the past couple months.

Heaven Shall Burn - Deaf to our Prayers

Unearth - III: In the Eyes of Fire

Into Eternity - Scattering of Ashes

Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists

Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil

Lamb of God - The Sacrament

Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse

Green Carnation - The Quiet Offspring

Stone Sour - Come What(ever) May

Life of Agony - Broken Valley

Mastodon - Blood Mountain

And on the way:

Mercenary - The Hours That Remain

Still can't find that damn new Kalmah album. Guess I'll have to break down and pay for shipping to get it - I'm a cheap ass.

Flah said:
The Kalmah is weird. The vocals are better, but they toned down the shredding.

Well that's disappointing then. Until their recent releases, I knew I could get some solid melo-death out of Kalmah and Callenish Circle.

Callenish Circle's "Pitch Black Effects" was defintely a sub-par album for them, and doesn't even come close to "My Passion_Your Pain" or "Flesh_Power_Dominion."

Well, maybe I'll enjoy the new Kalmah, but now I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

Both Cavalcade of Glee & Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms and Hospitality are bitchin' albums. Only two records this year? Dude is slowing down! Haha.

How's the Flashbulb?

lol man two albums an hour more like
i've just been on some other bodybuilding boards and lotsa music forums
plus i'm really into the experimental edge now. I like hearing new things. Didn't know how much others dig the bleep.
flashbulb is cool. like aphex twin meets this mortal coil. not shitting you. good she-bang vibe. kind of like listening to the soundtrack for a movie that hasn't been written. that's their style.
i like /at work/ "build it up break it down too" i had to get it straight from batota though, couldn't find the damn thing anywhere else. but heard it on the radio and dug it.

Speaking of Aphex Twin disciples, that new Clark is kind of boring. I was expecting more after reading all the press about it, but it just kind of is what it is, no more, no less. I guess I've been spoiled rotten by VSnares and Autechre.

Oh man, give the new Tim Hecker a spin. Guy is freaking consistent.

If you're still riding that experimental wave, give Khlyst as try: http://z9.invisionfree.com/undergroundreview/index.php?showtopic=923

Ha, the devil has a hell of a musical legacy then. VSnares and Robert Johnson. Almost puts John Hammond to shame.

1,000 posts. Whoa. I've been here that long.

Got a few more.

Mercenary - The Hours that Remain

Insomnium - The Day It All Came Down

Insomnium - Above the Weeping World

Disarmonia Mundi - Mind Tricks

majutsu said:
alpha liking the disarmonia?

Yeah, I'm diggin this album for the most part.

In a few of the songs I think the clean choruses seem somewhat out of place and almost take the energy out of the song - think newer Soilwork. I don't dislike clean choruses, but in some cases on this album I think they ruin an otherwise good song.

Overall though, I think it's a pretty good album. I haven't heard all of Fragments of D-generation (only 2 tracks) so I can't say how it compares to that. From reviews I've read, it seems Fragments got quite a bit of praise while Mind Tricks has gotten mostly criticism.

Fragments of D-Generation is an awesome record.

Other new-ish stuff that rules:
Isis - The Absence of Truth
Raunchy - Death Pop Romance
Poisonblack - Lust Stained Despair
Mercenary - The Hours That Remain
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
Amon Amarth - With Oden On Our Side

Stuff that has infinitely disappointed me.
Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse
Unearth - III
Heaven Shall Burn - Deaf To Our Prayers
Diecast - Internal Revolution

Stuff that flat out sucks:
Trivium - The Crusade

Stuff that is pretty good, but nothing to write home about:
Lamb of God - Sacrament
Threat Signal - Under Reprisal

Best DVD I've seen in a long time:
Evergrey - A Night To Remember.
I know, I know. Welcome to 2004.

There's other stuff to add to this, but my brain isn't working at all at the moment.

Dude, that Amon Amarth does rule.

Some seek shelter in the church/ A refuge for those with faith/ But we know how to smoke them out/ A pyre will be raised!

I was pretty disappointed with Unearth's new album too, but I did like the HSB and Evergrey albums. I thought Monday Morning Apocalypse was sooo much better than Inner Circle, although it definitely isn't quite on par Recreation Day.

I refused to buy The Crusade after seeing Trivium live and witnessing Matt Heafy pussy out on all of the old tracks and either break out his new "Hetfield-ish" vocal style, or just pawn off all of the growling duties to the guitarist. Plus, I can't say I liked any of the new tracks they played very much.

Monday Morning Apocalypse is (IMO) their worst effort yet. Songs are shorter, far less progressive, and boring. Not saying the first two make them necessarily bad. I do listen to them. They're just not Evergrey. They still rank as one of my favorite bands though. :)

The new HSB is not memorable to me at all like Antigone was.

Oh, I also saw you mention The Fall of Ideals somewhere. Holy crap do I love the song This Calling (repetitive, boring chorus, though. Labonte has a terrific voice, however). The rest of the album is pretty good, but nothing I'd jerk off over. Good band though. I'd like to see them live.

Let's see, what else ...

New God Dethroned isn't very good.
I have the new KSE and 40 Below Summer, but haven't listened yet ...
New Red Sparowes is kinda cool, but I can't listen to them for very long without needing to switch over to something else.
New Autumn Offering sucks.
Am I gay for finding the new Eighteen Visions catchy?
The Human Abstract's Nocturne is pretty solid.
New Haunted is a disappointment.

And last but not least, since you're always on the lookout for some good melo-death: Lyzanxia's UNSU album. Finally, the French do something right.

I must be the only one who liked the new Trivium. More thrash less new wave of American metal/rip off Gothenberg sound/lets sound like every other band. But then again I was listening to thrash when most of you dudes were in diapers. I'm not saying it's the best this year but I found it refreshing.

I do agree with you powerslave. I liked some of the record. Most of the music slays my face off. I can't stand Heafy's vocals though. And the slower tracks are weak, IMO.

Tread the Floods is one of the catchiest songs I've heard all year though. Killer instrumental title track at the end as well.

from zero said:

That's what I can't get past. Musically, some of the new stuff I heard is impressive and I can't deny the band's talent - I just hate the new vocals.

Dudes, I haven't even listened to samples from the new Trivium. That's how disillusioned I've become with the NWOAHM scene.

Yeah, that Unearf isn't good. Listened to that once. Same with the KSE. Holy boring. I put on one song from the new LoG and figured it was too much like Ashes, ha.

Please, someone do something interesting with the sound again.

Lamb of God has too many anthemic choruses on Sacrament. Gets boring. Still some fun music though. I'll always like them.

I love So It Goes off the nea Unearth, but pretty much only because of the trade-off solos. Maybe I'm just maturing in my tastes and beginning to hate metalcore more and more. Sounds about right.

On a non-metal note, I downloaded Army of Anyone's disc last night. I wonder how that is.

See, I can't call stuff like Unearf metalcore anymore because I don't hear the hardcore. I just hear the metal.

Tell me how that Army of Anyone is because I have a secret boner for Filter.

I got in an argument with a guy that said that everyone should like the new LoG, because they haven't changed since New American Gospel. I was like, bitch, A WARNING. A WARNING.

Plus, the remaster of NAG was ass. Great job adding more bass. Ugh, still some of the worst sounding drums ever, yet, still not as bad as the drums on And Justice for All.

Hmmm.

Riverside's debut LP, Out of Myself. Picked that up last week. Not as good as their next release, Second Life Syndrome. Seems a bit chaotic at times, like the band wasn't sure which direction to head. Still a solid progressive rock release.

Sieges Even - The Art of Navigating By the Stars. Took a chance on this band. They're on the Inside Out label (Evergrey, Riverside, Devin Townsend to name a few). I had never heard the band before, but from lots of reviews, it sounded like a solid prog rock outfit. I only listened to the disc once, but it seems disappointing. I'll give an update when I listen again.

Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone. Dayumn. Haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but it seems the band goes from the most brutal, evil sounding metal imaginable right to the opposite side of the spectrum, with some impressive clean vocals and melodic passages. Pretty awesome.

So yeah, Sieges Even still kinda bores me. Oh well.

Other stuff I've listened to in the last week:

Ihsahn - The Adversary. This would be an awesome album if there were better production. Like, a LOT better. I mean I realize it's black metal and a clean, crisp sound is totally unheard of, but wtf. Come on. "Called By The Fire" is still a sweet song though.

The Old Dead Tree - Perpetual Motion. Haven't listened to the whole thing, but it's pretty good. Some songs are good, some are ... meh. Another band that would benefit greatly from a ton of cash with which to record a better sounding record. Clean vocals need work.

Allele - Point of Origin. Generic hard rock. Some of it is pretty catchy, but otherwise forgettable.

Beyond Fear - Self titled. Only listened to a couple tracks so far. I had high expectations for whatever reason, and, well, they weren't met. Ripper's voice annoys me after a while.

By Night - Burn the Flags. Might be the worst music I've heard in a while.

Fear My Thoughts - Hell Sweet Hell. Pretty decent melo-death/metalcore/whatever other genre you want to lump the band in. Problem is, all songs sound the same after about ... two songs. And can someone play a freaking lead with a guitar?

Downloaded the new Blackfield. Haven't listened yet, but I have a huge boner for it and will surely be in bliss when I do.

Poisonblack - Lust Stained Despair...gave it one spin and liked it quite a bit.

Divercia - Cycle of Zero...this album kicks ass, IMO.

Green Carnation - A Blessing in Disguise...only one listen so far, but not bad at all.

40 Below Summer - The Last Dance...a few good songs, but nothing special overall.

Sentenced - Crimson...just like the other 2 albums I have by these guys, I like this one.

Others I got but haven't listened to yet:
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
Kalmah - The Black Waltz
Kamelot - The Fourth Legacy
Age of Ruin - Tides of Tragedy
Scar Symmetry - Pitch Black Progress
Forefather - The Fighting Man
System Shock - Arctic Inside
Pyramaze - Melancholy Beast

Christmas-time is good for my cd collection.

That Poisonblack is one of my favorites of '06. So catchy. Huge improvement with Ville Laihiala on vox, IMO. I hated the overly gothy vocals of their last record.

Listen to the Katatonia. Now. If you can get the song "July" out of your head, I'll be impressed.

Did you watch the 40 Below DVD? Can you see me in the crowd? Heh. I was standing near the bar a lot. I doubt I was in any shots.

Scar Symmetry would be so, so, so good if they improved in the clean-vocal department. Still an awesome band.

I <3 Green Carnation.

Yeah the Poisonblack album is damn good. I haven;'t heard the first so I can't comment on the vocals.

"July" is probably the best song on the album. I don't know that I like it as much as you do, but it's a good tune.

Its not that I don't like the clean vocals of Scar Symmetry, it's just that they seem to contrast the deep growling vocal style too much. The cleans just seems to pussified sometimes. I still dig the band, but wouldn't mind if the cleans were a little less clean - if that makes sense.

Green Carnation is one of those bands that I warm up to the more I listen to them.

"My Twin" is also awesome off that Katatonia.

I totally agree with your Scar Symmetry comment. It's too much of a juxtaposition with their vocals. Like trying to have Chris Barnes share vocal duties with Kelly Clarkson.

I've listened to a couple tracks by Moonspell...I cant even remember the names so they must not have stood out to me. I'll have to give them another listen.
