Taking Advil before training...

My left biceps is strained. When I do pullups or curls it screams at me. :kaioken: It is very painful... but I still get through my full workouts.

Does anyone here ever take Advil before they train?

I try to avoid ibuprofen as it completely halts protein synthesis in the muscles. I'm sure one or two here and there won't hurt the average bear on an as needed basis, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

"The exercise-induced changes in PGF(2alpha) and PGE(2) were not different between the ibuprofen and acetaminophen groups. These results suggest that ibuprofen and acetaminophen have a comparable effect on suppressing the normal increase in PGF(2alpha) in human skeletal muscle after eccentric resistance exercise, which may profoundly influence the anabolic response of muscle to this form of exercise."

It doesn't seem to affect total body protein metabolism, but definitely affects skeletal muscle...and it looks to be a great way to shoot yourself in the foot.

No pain, no gain, eh?

They should put that shit on the bottle, I have taken 400mgs before every workout for the last few months, ...what if you have a very strong anabolic 'response'?

I occasionally take between 1200-1400mgs an hour or so before I work out. Hasn't affected me that much. Or at least I can't tell. But it's not every session, either.

If you are counter-medicating with anything that depicts a mastiff on the label, or has the word "perros" in the instructions, you can disregard the above warning. ;)

Joker, do a search on a thread I posted about ibuprofen a while ago if you can. You may want to stop taking that much bro.

It basically says what Spatts said though

Aspirin works a lot differently than ibuprofen. I'm not sure how it effects anything relative to training. Something I'll have to look into. Maybe Spatts knows

I remember that whole thread.:)

That's how much it takes to relieve pain for me. Either a headache or otherwise. I've always been like that. I don;t respond well to pain killers or relievers.

It's only occasionally, though. Perhaps once or twice a month. I don't have near the aches and pains I used to once I switched to a WSB style workout.

But thanks. I appreciate your concern, man. I really do.:)

Oh, I thought you were taking that everyday. I just reread your post that says "occasionally"....duh...sorry:)

maybe you should look into other methods of pain relief/ prevention and restoration

treat the cause not the symptoms

I have been looking and I have not yet found any data linking a decrease in muscle protein synthesis with Aspirin. I'll keep looking though.

Ditto
I haven't found anything relevant... Just a bunch of crap I really didn't need to know.

Yes, and as mentioned, occasionally. Maybe once or twice a month prior to a workout, or if I have a headache. (Which isn't to often.)

I take it if I have an ache or some minor pain that would directly effect my workout. However, I won't take it to cover up the pain of an injury. Does that make sense?
