Squats are bad for your knees, whereas running is bad for your joints?

Squats are not bad for your knees if done properly. They actually strengthen the tendons and muscles surrounding and supporting the knee.

I think pain in the knees can be avoided. It depends on your form and the type of shoe that you wear.

It is also essential to constantly stretch.

yeah, who said they were bad for your knees? okay, if done improperly or if you have pre-existing damage to your knees already...then I can see that they are "bad."

hey louden, your avatar looks good--must be all that DC training!:)

Squats are fine for the knees, it is all in the stance, execution, and with heavy loads, the shoes play a role, use something flat like Chuck Taylor's so you aren't pushed forward......running is not bad for the joints either.......people who say this either squat with bad form, or they have pussy-itis and are afraid to squat or they don't wanna get in running shape.......of course so as not to offend, this doesn't apply to people with a pre-exsisting injury making it difficult to do either or both.

If you do tons of long-distance running, you're probably gonna get repetetive stress injuries. Wearing the right shoes etc can help, but the human body wasn't designed to run long distances bipedally.

Yeah, if I run on concrete too much my kness get a little sore, but I can run for days off road and not be sore at all.
