Squat questions

I recently began squatting (using the 3 day old school posted earlier). My question is: Will you get the same results from squatting on a Smith machine with a bench under you as using a squat rack and bar? Keep in mind I'm still inexperienced with this exercise.

Also, thighs floor parallel or below parallel?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Try to get away from the smith machine. You will have to probaly cut you weight for a while but you will use your core muscle more. The whole squatting to a bench is fine just try to go just below parallel to start but level is okay also. Hope that helps

Smith machines can be usefull for some things...squats isnt one of them. Ditch the bench and go to the power rack, set the catches so that when you have the bar on your back your knees are a little above paralell with the bar resting on the catchs. Now load up the bar while it is sitting on the catches and push it all the way to the back of the rack. get rid of anything that you'd hit on the way up and get underneath it and squat while pushing it against the back of the rack. That will keep you in a strait up and down motion and you wont have to stabilize as much(sorta helps like a smith machine would). You can also handle a lot more weight this way...you could do this for a couple weeks then start doing full squats with a barbell cause that is the best way to go. If you need a better explanation or want more exercises IM me.

And thank you greek! Good advice. I want to get the best results possible and not cheat myself. Good advice. Thank you.

Hit the Smith Machine. Keep the center of your feet parallel to your back/shoulders. You want the best results so do them ass to the floor, slowly though, doing squats this way might make you want to bounce back up. You know what, if your new to squats go out and get the Arnold Encyclopedia, it has some great pictures of Tom Platz doing squats and every other exercise you can think of. You can move your feet a little forward to the side or in to hit different areas, also you should be doing front squats. Anyone that wants to be serious about bodybuilding must have the Arnold Encyclo, it's my bible. If you don't got $25 to spare e-mail me or i-m me and i can scan the pics and describe better. Otherwise good luck and I hope this help's.

im sorry bro. its a good book for pictures of exercises, but thats about it. its by no means a bible of exercise execution, current information, or current exercise science.

but the motivational pictures are good, i'll give you that.:)

but its a good start for a beginner to see things done fairly correctly instead of looking at some knuckleheads at the gym doing things all wrong.
