Smith Machine Deadlifts

I just started doing deadlifts again, but instead of doing partial deadlifts I use a smith machine... going through the entire range of motion. Great upper/mid back workout and the motion is similar to regular deadlifts. I can feel them for days, and can really target the back.

Only problem is your body can't track with the weight when you are in the smith rack. If you are going to use it only do the upper part of the motion to save wear on your lower back.

doing dead lifts is like trying to have sex with your pants zipped up........
wait a minute that doesnt make sence.

Machines are the worst things that have happened to weight training (there are exceptions of course.....)

your body doesnt constantly work in one straight line with any movement. it works on all different angles. with stabilizer muscles there to help out the other muscles........when you use a machine you prevent the stabilizers from working and render your body only capable of doing that exercise on that machine. try switching to a free weight version of the exercise and you wont be able to do it with the same amount of weight or with strict form.

"destroy the machines"
-earth crisis

Its a bit of a lame argument........but you get the idea

amen x2 for endpoint, machines are the devil!

For me, regular DL seem to target more hamstrings, gluts and lowerback. With the SMDLs, I can target the upper and middle back more. Also the fact I can handle more weight, and no more scraped shins is a nice bonus.

There are other reasons I like them, I pinched a nerve(Sciatica) in my lower back a year ago doing Hack Squats. Since then, I have been wary of doing DLs. I know with proper form this shouldn't be a problem... but it's in the back of my mind. SMDL, along with Partial DLs allow me to continue doing them. I wonder if I can do cleans on the SM (jk). I also think it may be a good movement for a beginner that wants to add deadlifts to their workout.

I don't think machines are that bad, they are good for a change up but not for your standard routine. I'll sometimes change up my chest/back workout and use hammer strength machines. I pay for them, might as well figure a way to use them.

LG - I'm gonna disagree with the boys somewhat. I think that on deadlifts and bent rows, smith machines, while not as ideal as a free bar, are not a whole lot different.

The reason is that stablizer muscles are used for balance, primarily on press-type excercises such as bench, mil press, etc. When you are doing a pulling motion, there's really not too much to balance or stablize. You're just pulling. And that's gonna be pretty much the same motion whether using a freebar or smith.

Now go easy on me guys, just my .02. :)
