Shoulders, Tri's, & A Very Scary Moment

Power Cleans - 5X2 - 135
Push Press - 3X5 - 205
Close Grip Bench - 3X5 - 275, 285, 295, 300 (2), 300(2)

The Push Press felt pretty heavy. I needed to go heavy in order to test myself. I took some time off and I need to know exactly where I am with this.

The close grip bench felt good. 275, 285, & 295 felt great. All fluid except for my lower half.

All of a sudden I come back from a layoff and forget to coordinate my lower body???
I looked for a spot for 300. The kid behind me seemed good enough. Seemed like he could listen. :)
I told him, "this is my last set. I need you to be there for me. I will pound rep 1, 2, and 3 up. If I do get stuck, I need you to help pull me out of it. Do you understand? Do you have any questions?"
He said, "no".
On my 3rd rep I felt my tris fail. I said, "up, up, pick it up. Up!!!" At this point I looked up and saw a place where I could safely get out from under the bar. As you can see, the spotter was not paying attention and did not listen.

The moral of the story is, if you ever get stuck in this position you better know wtf to do. My vid displays a spontaneous way to get out from underneath 300 lbs when its almost about to smash your face in bc your spotter isn't paying attention.

Needless to say, I have not seen the kid since. Lex Talionis.

btw, while I was editing the vid I saw the guy make a face at the camera. Matter of fact, I saw 2 out of the 3 making faces.

These are the same guys that never look my way and never have anything to say to me. This is indicative of the coward. If you have something to say, say it to my face. Don't hide behind a camera or a friend.

All you warriors on the board. If you ever see someone like me, giving there all, spilling there guts, support them. Please do not mock them out of jealousy. Give em' a pat on the back.

Understand that there is a reason why that man stands alone.

Damn that was a bit scary. I don't regret working out alone when I see things like that.

i hate that crap, nothing worse than a spotter who doesn't pay attention. thats happened to me before and i almost became gunshy to lift heavy again. and i don't normally advocate violence but i would have a talk with the kids that like to make faces. thanks for the vid though. keep up the good work.
 
Hmmm...good lord you are tall!!! :)

On the close grips...try taking the bar just a bit lower. Watch when you began to fail...why did the bar go upwards? Your elbows began to flare and you pressed back instead of up...that shouldn't be.

When I close grip bench (Board press, flat press, etc..) the bar is in a straight line. About the only way that I can accomplish this is by pressing 'away' from my face (Feels that way but isn't really).

Don't press back towards the rack...ever. Think about it. Even for tricep recruitment you wouldn't keep bending your elbows more on the lockout...you would extend them. Extend OUTWARD next time...

dude, you looked like you are killing the bar on that clean in the first vid, but as far as the push press goes, isn't that movement like a snap movement, meaning you thrust the weight upwards in one movement rather than a cheat military press?

you're lucky you didn't get killed. I think you should try lifting in a powercell next time. With spotters like that you don't need enemies:bawling: .

I hope at leas you get some growth for all the effort that was put in. Don't worry about the kids in wifebeaters. they can make faces all they want since none of them will ever weigh more than a buck fifty:rolleyes:

I am comfortable performing my overhead/push press. I want to learn more more though :). What doyou mean by "snap movement?".

Honestly. I called him to pull up the bar and he didnt respond. I lost all confidence in him. I knew I couldnt press it up so I decided to let it go back into the rack. I had no choice :(

I know you wouldn't have dissed me like that man. :) But damn those skull krushers were heavy.

Wow, that was close, nice escape move! Think you might have damaged those good looks if you hadn’t have pulled that one off!!

Looks like the guy didn’t appreciate how quickly your arms give out doing close grip and is expecting you to fight it a bit like you might be able to on a standard bench press.

Thanks for posting the vids though, really interesting to have a look at peoples form and progress…

Just messing with you guys. The vid is definitely scary and I got out of it with my wits :)

Never and I repeat never again will I ever trust anyone except a strict few with spotting me. At this point I am considering it a privalige. :)

Maybe I had worded it wrong, but what I meant was, that when you have the bar at shoulder height, you would explosively press overhead with the help of the rest of your body vs. just your upper body. It seemed like a lot of weight for you to press overhead in an explosive manner. Hell, I ain't an expert, but I always thought this:

same sort of thing happened to me at the gym...i told the guy how to spot and if he had any questions and he said no...i knew just by the way he was standing he didnt know anything when i was pushing the weight so i just stopped..
 
There's a push press and a push jerk. What PH was doing is a push press. What PC posted is a push jerk. With a push press the hip and knee extension thrust is just enough to drive the bar half to a third of the distance up, then the rest is pressed up.
