yes, warmup is critical. I do single plate raises with a 10lb plate in each hand raise them up slow, then in a slow circular motion, i do these in between sets to keep the muscles warm.
I might add that when I lift I always dress warm, even though it may not be cold, but im a firm believer in heat. If you can keep your muscles warm the better off you are.
