overtraining?

Ok, my gym partner insists on going Monday through Friday to the gym...then rest during the weekend?..I insist on resting Wednesday????? Isnt 5 days in a row overtraining?????

I never train more than two days in a row if I can help it, after the 2nd day I feel my body telling me that it needs a rest.

As far as weightlifting goes (cardio being a different story), it's one day of heavy lifting followed by one day of rest, no exceptions. Many argue that you can do upper body one day, legs the next. But that doesn't work for me.

I think if you really want to get the most out of an intense workout, then it has to be preceded by a rest day. In other words, your best workouts come out when you are completely fresh.

It all depends upon your genetics, diet, and rest. Noone is the same and you need to find what works for you.

yeah i went monday, tus, thurs and fri... took off wed, sat and sun. And I see better results going mon - thurs, off fr- sun, especially cuz im wrestling 5 - 6 days a week my body kinda tapers off to haveing sunday off and i see much better results this way

The surest sign of overtraining is a lack of progress in the gym. If neither your poundages nor reps are going up it's a good bet your not giving yourself sufficient time to recover. I tend to prefer a complete day off between workouts, although sometimes I'll train two days in a row. Depending on your genetics you may need even more recovery time.

i agree with that, you should take it slow ,build to it and see if it's for you or not.i know people that train 5 a week and make good gains ,........i do 4 days a week and works well for me..mon,tue,fri,sat,...i actually take the 2 days in the middle off.that's just me though......:fro:

I workout every morning Mon-Fri and I don't have any problems with OT. I only try to hit around one bodypart/day and have had good success with that so far. As long as you get good sleep and have a proper diet, I think many people can do it.

what i've been noticing especially today is gettin feeling from my body if it's being over worked. this being the 4th day in a row i would of worked out but i got a weird feeling not to. you ought to listen to your body be instictive. sometimes i get feeling to shorten up my routine on a certain day. listen to ur body.

Good tip, I feel the same way too. Sometimes you just know when you are overtraining, Signs: No progress in the gym, tiredness, minor muscle pulls, hard to wake up in the morning, chills and sickness.

ok this is my routine....let me know if you think this is overtraining:

Monday : Chest, Triceps
Tuesday: Shoulders and Some leg, ( Deadlifts, quads )
Wednesday: Back, Biceps
Thurday, Legs ( Squats, etc) Shrugs also.
Friday, Cesht and Biceps again.

I do about 3 to 4 exercise per body part 6-12reps till failure. I use heavy weights

OVERTRAINING!!!!

Damn I am so tired of this debate. I hope that NO ONE takes any offense to this...just allow me to rant for a second. There is no way that you can say..."isn't 5 days in a row overtraining". Not enough information. People worrry about overtraining too much in my opinion. And the thing that seems to get lost in this debate is that YOU CAN INCREASE YOUR RECOVERY RATE! It is not set in stone that you will ALWAYS need 7 days before you hit the same body part again. And I am not talkin about Anabolics. If you systematically increase your GPP (General Physical Preparedness) and in turn your Work Capacity. Then you can handle ALOT more than you are "supposed" to.

Personally I am a powerlifter. And I train anywhere from 11-14 times a week. It took me a while to get to that level. And not all training sessions are normal workouts. Some involve dragging a sled or doing band work. But it all contributes to my ability to do work. And it allows me to train at a level that would be "overtraining" for others. Plus...and this is the great thing...I am never sore. My poundages are steadily increasing...and as a result my muscle mass increases as well.

Too each there own...but I personally think that one should worry about undertraining...rather than overtraining.

Hannibal...I agree with you., but reading posts n this board I am worried I might been working out too much and loosing mass. I personally feel ready everytime I go to the gym and I am not extremely sore..BUT I do notice better performance when I take a day off.

Bro, take it form someone who lost about 10 lbs in overtrainning
train no more than 4 days a week
get a good mount of rest
diet right
sup right
no more than 9 sets for a large muscle group, no more than 7 for a small
try to keep you workouts between 35-50 minutes.

Sometimes less is more
remember that

There are NO set in stone rules like that for training. Except that workouts should not exceed 60 minutes. Training is "fluid" man....ever changing.

When someone that does more (the right way) meets someone that does less....More will always win. Just have to be smart about it.

If you were a woman I would kiss you. I have said that on this board so many times I cant even count. Far too many people use it as an excuse not to do more it makes me sick.
