...got the fever again...never had a streetbike.....dirt bikes as a kid.....what would be a respectable first time bike - low end on money for now.

My dad just got an 02 HD ultra classic electra glide....kinda feels like riding on a couch. I'm personally a fan of HS heritage softail classics. I think they're sexy.

Moto Guzzi is making some sweer cruisers, and I LOVE the new Triumph Bonnieville America- around $8K brand new.

as little as possible - seriously being a first bike and all I don't wanna drop a lot 8-9k maybe

If this is your first Street bike, I would sugguest buying a used
one.
There are lots of people that buy a Bike, and for a number of reasons sell it a year or 2 later barely used. Some at a very reduced cost

exactly - on the used thing - just wanted to see what style I like - I love the honda

That's a good point Y but not always. Some get hooked.
I bought my first road bike when I was 18. Now 11yrs lator I'm still riding.

I CAN'T believe what I am reading!!!!! Deeeeep breath.

NO self respecting MAN would ride a <gasp) honda.
I get that you like the way that it looks, okay, whatever.
Here is the deal
Buy a Harley
Yes, you will spend a bit more for it but it will cost you little to nothing to ride it.
Our first bike - 1994 FXDWG, paid $14,000 for it, rode it for 3 years and got $13,000 out of it. Show me a <eeeeeek> honda that will hold it's value like that.

Here is a link - they are a bit high on prices but it will give you an idea of what is available.

c'mon T - you are slightly biased - not everyone can afford to throw down 15k on a first bike ya know

Slightly biased???? Just honest, babe. You will eat it in depreciation on a Honda. Are you looking to pay cash or finance??? When we bought our first one we couldn't AFFORD it either and financed it - it was the only thing that I ever bought that I was just happy as hell to write the check for every month. If you shop you should be able to get into something for maybe 12 or so. Our payments were $242 a month. Here is how you justify it:
How much do you spend on entertainment a month????
You will be spending more time going on rides so what you spend on going out to eat, going to movies etc with be reduced (it really will)
How much do you spend on gas? You will start riding more and driving less to your fuel bill will go waaaayyy down.
How much are you paying for prostitutes????
Buy a Harley and the pussy will be free (HUGE SAVINGS).

I am not even reading the rest of the replies.

Harley Davidson- you will never regret it!!!

Heritage Springer

If you like the shadow ace, check out the Yamaha V-star also, I rode a buddies' star the other day and it gives a GREAT ride (for a jap bike) Very smooth, low maintenance (shaft drive). He got his used for about $7,000, which isn't bad considering it's a 2001. Personally, I'm a Harley man, but some of those jap bikes are pretty decent rides... Raina, I just sold my Heritage so that I could start a new full custom chopper project, that was my favorite bike up to now....

If I had the money I would get a bike from Jessy James at www.westcoastchoppers.com He makes some badass shit.

Yea that would be ideal. I was at the Donnie Smith bike show in Minneapolis back in March and after coming back from there my next bike has to be a custom ride with a 250 back tire.

Damn it felt good sitting on one of those custom rides!!!

Jesse authographed my tank top...
that is a close as I will come for awhile...

Corn - yes, we are a tough crowd but mostly I'm just picking on ya', sweetie.

I would suggest going with a multistrada bike, not fully a cruiser but not fully a street bike.

Sort of a gentelman's street bike.

But if you do want a cheaper cruiser, go with the Nipponese bikes, yamaha, handa etc.

Don't listen to the yokels who tell you a Harley is cheap. They cost an ass-load of cash and ALWAYS require maintenance.

I would bet some of the High rollers giving advice are:
BS'ing
Have no life therfore no bills/ resp.
Old
Spoiled

Listed in order of likelihood.

Corn,

they are Sweet $8k brand new with 2 year warranty!

Try finding a place that will fix your triumph. Or even change the freakin oil....

Anyone telling you to get a Moto Guzzi or Triumph for your first bike has likely never owned one and just trying to sound like a veteran biker.

Go with something common for your first bike. The nip bikes require less maintenance and the maintenance costs are cheaper.

First off Guzzis are fairly low maintainance, I know, I do the maintainance on my brothers.

Secondly I have probably owned more bikes than you ever will. Have had one almost my entire adult bike. First was a 69 Norton, then a 77 Bonnie, then a 79 bonnie, then a BMW R65, then a BMW R100rs alond with an 883.

Paid my way thru first year of college turning a wrench on Harleys, Triumphs and BMWs.

My suggestion on the new Triumph has to do with price point and warranty, which he cannot get with a used oil-dripper of a Harley.
Do not get me wrong Harley's are gorgeous, but they underproduce to keep prices high, and they are not as good as the knock offs like Titan or some of the others using S&S engines.

As far as maintainance, the dealership will have no problem servicing it.

Oh yeah so FUCK OFF!

You know this because you are a dissatified Harley owner?????
In the three years we had the WG the only maintenance it required was oil change.

Show me a "nip bike" that will even come close to a HD when it comes to depreciation.

He is asking for a CHEAP cruiser, not a fucking investment.

I never owned a shit-hogg before, but I ride with HD riders alot, and I can't even tell you how many Saturday rides they had to cancel out of because they're bike was in the shop.

HD's only hold value if mileage is low.

Arlen Ness makes the only cool high-end cruiser that holds serious value. Try reselling your fucking 84 Elctra Glide that has 14K miles on it for a good price :)

Triumph is a great bike, don't get me wrong. I traded my 955i last year, loved the thing.
But standard maint was costing darn near 25% more than my Aprilia.

Guzzi is a great bike too, but the guy wants a solid, inexpensive cruiser. He can get twice the bike, half the maint cost going with something japanese.

My recomendation for a first bike would be to get a metric cruiser. Don't get me wrong I love Harley's but alot of people dont't have that kind of cash to drop on one for a first bike. I have 2 Custom Road Stars and ride at least 200 miles a week mostly on the weekends. I frequent places like the rock store, Neptunes, Cook's Corner, Calabases, Red Car cafe etc... I hang with Harley Riders all the time and nowadays everyone is really cool and doesn't really give a damn what you ride especially if you have a lot of love into your bike. With a metric cruiser you can save alot of cash and still have that nice fat sound that wakes the neighbors if you like. I like the Yamaha Road Star because it sits low and the tank is very fat. It's a big 1600 cc bike. Get a Harley down the line when you know this isn't a passing phase and your gonna be riding for life. Other Metrics out there are the Drifter, the Shadow, VTX it all depends on what brand you buy and what style you like. My dream bike at some point down the line would be a fully dresses Indian Chief. I saw a few really sweet ones at the last C.H.O.C (Childrens Hospital of Orange County) ride.

When shopping for your next motorcycle "depreciation" should never be a factor of concern.

Motorcycling has nothing to do with "depreciation".

HD has probably more poseur's than all the other manufacturers combined. HD is not the only company that makes motorcycles. Not way back when and not now.

Corn have you considered the "standard bikes"?
Like the ZRX12000R. Comfy yet nimble and very powerful. It has a bored out version of the ZX11 motor. Its retro just not "James Dean" retro.
http://www.kawasaki.com/index2.asp

Or why not a Honda Night Hawk? Not as much power but quick and at just under $6k a bargain.

I missed this the first time thru!!!

I've been a "biker chick" with and without a bike for most of my adult life. We just bought a 2000 Ultra Classic and my hubby has an S&S 113cui sitting on the bench in the shop which is the beginning of a custom. Sounds like maybe we need to get our sweeties together. I started riding lessons last week and will hopefully have my own by spring providing I can get him to restore what I want - early '80's shovel head of some sort.

To the person who said there are a lot of "posers" out there - you are absolutely right, just spent a week with a whole bunch of them LOL. There are also a good number of "riders", a good friend of ours rode a Virago for years and nobody gave him any static about it at all as he rode everyone into the dirt. It would be 30 degrees outside and he would still be riding. He just bought his first softail. There are a good number of builders out there other than HD but a honda is still a honda which I guess is good for a first bike because at least you won't feel too bad when you lay it over and when you are done riding it it has depreciated to the point that it is basically disposable.:D

MC-1.jpg

Just bought a 2002 HD Electra Glide Classic. It's an awesome bike. Just turned 900 miles on it last night. If someone wants to get one go with the fuel injected model. It's the best way to go. It was worth the extra money.

I agree that on the Brit sport bikes maintainance is expensive, but I think the Bonnies are not as bad, and should be in line with the Jap cruisers, witch who they are intended to compte with.

As for the Guzzis I haven't heard any complaints from my brother who is a cheap bastard-LOL

Well guzzi can be about the same as ducati/triumph/aprilia if there's a dealer nearby. No dealership means those shops can run the prices up on parts.

Yes this is true!! I should have added the caveat that they should only be purchased if there is a dealership near by.

BTW- know what the best thing about the new Triumphs is????

NO LUCAS ELECTRICAL!!!!!
