OPINIONS ON ATKINS (writing an article)

I'm writing an opinion article for my school paper about low carb diets such as atkins and how they're uber popular right now, except i dont have an actual opinion. so, i come to you, my EF friends to hopefully provide me with some information which shits on or supports low carb diets. maybe even Mr. X could grace me with his presence?

Well, as someone who did Atkins for over a year I'll toss out my opinion.

Personally I think that carb controlling is important (everyone can agree with that).

For CKDers I think the diet is a godsend on a short term basis. As far as an acutal lifestyle change, I'm not totally convinced yet. I DO think that carb controlling is important and I DO think that restricted carbs then slowly reintroducing them into one's diet teaches some discipline when it comes to food selections. However, I think this fact can be easily overshadowed by fat, sedentary people who don't want to work out and would rather diet themselves to death.

I think Atkins did a great job in making ppl realize how unhealthy they were eating. But i beleive that the limitations are generally unhealthly longterm. Every1 sasy not to eat candy, cakes, etc, but back then, no one really listened. Now, when carbs are made the 'bad'' guy, these things are avoided. When ppl resume normal lifestyles, weight does come back on, (UCLA research showed this recently).

So basically, smart eating is the way to got, meaning watching not only carbs, but fat, protein, etc to make a balanced diet in combonation w/ excersize.

I'm not a fan of it myself, just because you eat a lot of crap on it, it just may be DIFFERENT crap from what you are eating before. Taking out excess sugar is good, adding tons of saturated fat is going to be hard on the heart. Either in moderation is harmless.

Personally, I stay away from all low-carb diets just because my body doesn't like them. Like a lot of people on the board I started out fat; at one point was low-carb for a year. Lost a little fat, but had no strength and trouble sleeping.

Now I'm no expert........but the saturated fat instake on the Atkins plan......Never helped me get lean. I'm sure that for extremely obese people any subtraction of carbohydrates work. But in my particular experience, it slowed my metabolism to nil, and just made me feel nasty. I still "low" carb just in a much healthier sense.

low carb

Hey bro im no diet guru but I think i may be of some help. go to www.lowcarber.org That is a website that has an atkins section, you should sign up and ask people that are on the diet what they think of it and tell them it is for school. I hope I was of some help to you bro

LOL mr X. he is definately ubiquitous yet the kaiser sose of the board.

Atkins- well I found out some interesting stuff on how important insulin is to cell growth- HGH depends on it to create the non insulin IGF-1 and the whole body depends on it in many different ways---- this is a very controversial issue.... So those who want to say that Insulin blocks HGH-- do some research- because it does and it doesnt - getting it to do what it needs to do for HGH is the key. - the most compelling thing the Atkins diet has to offer is the protein (meat) factor. Eating meat puts alot LESS stress on the pancreas to produce insulin. The food tree the government gives us to follow- can actually stress our pancreas into overworking to create insulin to keep the glucose levels down. The reason diabetics are diabetics- need insulin- is that their genetics or their eating habits have destroyed the metabolism of sugar (glucose). Atkins is good in moderation- but staying away from processed sugar actually trains your body to not like it.

Here you can research Macrobiotics and sugar.

I was Macrobiotic for 2 years. To this date, I feel very uncomfortable if I eat a cookie from the grocery store, and sweets are an aversion to me.

You can train your body to not crave these quick glucose products... well that is all I am going to say--- you have to do your own research- but hopefully I may have given you key phrases that you can research on google.

In any event - good luck with the article!
