Did military press, upright rows and side laterals today. My shoulders hurt like hell after military press but I kept going, now I'm getting this stabbing like pain near the joint and perhaps in the muscle? Very minor though., but worrying (shoulders have weak/poorly engineered joints apparently) How long should I lay off the training? My next day is chest/tricep in 2 days.

As you may be able to tell, I'm reluctant in putting off the training but potential shoulder injury is an extenuating circumstance =/. Is it 4-6 day rest?

Where is the pain exactly? I'm having similar problems and the doc told me its just an irritated biceps tendon and to lay off the shoulder excersises for about a week or two. He also recommended a closer grip for military press. I would let it rest for a week or two and if the pain doesnt go away then see a doctor.

It's an on/off pulsating pain, hurt last night for 5 minutes then it hurt for a few seconds every few minutes. I had it in my right shoulder last week, this was after doing military presses. I might just drop that out of the routine and use dumbell presses =/. Thanks for your input guys.

extenuating exshmenuating... we had a deal! a signed, writeen agreement... he passes each grade in two weeks or i get the company, and he didn't finish 9th grade

sorry, HAD to quote billy madison there

I had sort of the same problem about three weeks ago, I think it was a rotator cuff injury. Yours sounds more serious than what I had which only hurt when I lifted something or moved it the wrong way. I didn't do any lifting for about 8 days and then started off with some stuff that didn't really involve the shoulder. It feels fine now.

Run a search for "rotator cuff" on these boards, you'll come up with some pretty bad horror stories that'll convince you that it's definitely worth resting a couple days. Good luck man.

I really screwed up my shoulder doing military presses several years ago. For me, it wasn't the exercise itself, but getting the bar off the rack (no partner/spotter). Since then, I only use dumbell movements for shoulders and haven't had a problem.

If you managed to damage your shoulder pretty good, look up some rotator cuff exercises. It's important to dump your ego when you do these. You only want to strengthen the muscles somewhat, there's no need to use anything close to heavy weight.

Also make sure that you're not neglecting your rear delts and upper back. Muscle imbalances in the shoulder area are a major cause of rotator cuff problems.

When you are doing an exercise and you suddenly experience some pain, make sure to stop. I have learned this the hard way too many times. Ice and heat the area and use some anti-inflams.....If it doesn't start to feel better, go see your Doctor. When you ice the area, make sure to move the shoulder around slightly to avoid "locking" the shoulder up. Do this for about 10 min and then apply some heat. This will increase blood flow to the area.
