Hello, I'm new to this site :wavey:

I'm 5'11, I weigh 228 pounds, and I've decided to make a real effort to get into shape. Regular exercise, improved diet, whatever it takes - the only problem is I know next to nothing about effective exercise and diet, so I've been scouring the internet for any useful information I can find, and fortunately stumbled across this gem of a message board :)

According to this BMI calculator, I have to lose 50 pounds in order to reach a healthy weight, so that's my first goal. After that, I'll be looking into building a bit of muscle!

If anybody can help me out with a few pointers, some motivational techniques, a good diet and/or exercise plan, helpful links, or anything that could be of use, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

First off, lose the BMI theory.....junk...........now, read these boards, post your diet and we'll try and help............

Throw out the concept of a "diet." This is a lifestyle change, not a temporary fix so you can fit into a certain outfit.....Consider the word "diet" to be the way to eat every day....

Keep the foods basic & clean: Proteins, healthy carbs, good fats. No processed foods, fast foods, packaged foods. Plenty of water.

Proteins: chicken, eggs, tuna, salmon, lean beef, turkey, etc
Fats: almonds, olive oil, walnut oil, walnuts, flax oil, etc
Carb: sweet potatoes, brown rice, veggies, etc

Hell right. According to the BMI, Arnie, at the time he won the O, was obese. I bet almost everyone here is obese on that cruddy chart.

Still, that doesn't mean you're not overweight and too fat but choosing to do something about it is step one. Good luck.

what is wrong with bmi?

The problem with a standard BMI chart is that it only takes into consideration the sex, height & weight of an individual when calculating BMI. You could have 2 people, both weighing 200 lbs, one with a 10% bodyfat & one with a 30% bodyfat -- which one is healthier?? Yet, according to the chart, both are obese.....
