Myth About Fruit

I just recently started making my attempt to live a healthier lifestyle. I have gained about 20 pounds and enough is ENOUGH!

I have been eating a lot of chicken, green vegetables, walnuts and almonds, rice cakes with a thin layer of natural peanut butter (yum).

I'm already feeling a difference!!!

HOWEVER, I know fruit has a lot of sugar/carbs. I want wonderful results with my diet. I am afraid that eating fruit will counteract all my hard work...so is it true that fruit is bad for diets because of all the sugars and carbs? ;)

Thanks

It depends on you.

I have a family history of diabetes. My mom had gestational diabetes when she was pregant with me and my siblings. Anyway, if I was still eating the way I use to eat (lots of high GI carbs, fruit/fruit juice, the dangerous "whites" (flour, potatoes, sugar, bread, pasta)), it was only a matter of time before I got diabetes.

That said, I do incorporate LOW GI fruit like berries into my diet. Those are the only "fruits" I eat on a regular basis. I have to take Glucorell just to eat an apple. Citrus fruits like oranges and pineapple are like candy to me and would really mess with my results if I ate them.

If you want to add fruit (I  oatmeal & berries), start with berries. Then work your way up the "GI" list regarding different fruits and see how it affects you and your results.

Nyc (Goldie - lol) is right on.

I would simply add that in addition to the GI...look at the GL as well.

Glycemic Load

I think its different for different people.. obviously.. I gain weight really easily so i have to do a lot of trian and error with my eating.

For now, as i'm trying to lose some body fat.. i'm sticking with strawberries and berries on my oatmeal in the morning... and may add in a apple before my gym w/out in the evening.

its hard though, maybe because we've been told from a young age about the benefits of fruits. I still find it hard to understand that a diet sans fruit is the healthy way to go in the long tern... even if I'm getting lots of veggies.

Glycemic Load

Where can you find this information, if you wanted to find out the GI and GL?

Glycemic Load

Please explain what Glycemic Load is all about. I think this may be the final piece to my puzzle (i.e., getting control over my diet).

GI mainly refers to how your blood sugar reacts to a food.

G Load takes into account the GI as well as the AMOUNT.

ex.....Resses pbutter cups...

high gi.....hella high GL

watermellon

moderate GI....eat enough and the GL goes up.

think in terms of TYPE of carb AND the amount

OOHH. Yes, that happens to me when I eat too much oats. Anything more than a cup (dry) and I can feel it affect my blood sugar level. I didn't understand why that was happening (I mean its oats not pasta).

Yes ma'am.....that's it exactly.

I really think that the GL is MUCH MUCH more important than the GI....its the sneekyness of the GL that gets you
