Hey guys,

Need some help with a few things...your opinions matter to me, so I'm asking here.

For the last year or so, I've been working on a website and forums for mixed martial arts. I've hired a professional design company and web hosting company. It's cost me over $1500 so far and I'm probably still going to pay some extra cash.

Anyways, not really advertising anything, just had a few questions.

1- how would you feel about receiving an email from admin / mod everytime your post gets deleted / edited / moved?

2- how do you feel about flash embedded in the script? on front page? on the forums?

3- max # of ads on a page?

4- interviews with professional fighters?

5- should there be a separate forum for chat?

6- for those who are familiar with building forums, any ideas on programs or applications to use to enhance the performance or feel of the forum?

Appreciate any comments and ideas.

10 to start, make it so they can adjust it themselves. If the default is too many then it'll look like there's less traffic/posts.

4- interviews with professional fighters?

Couldn't hurt

5- should there be a separate forum for chat?

Yes, but don't make a million sub-forums like here.

6- for those who are familiar with building forums, any ideas on programs or applications to use to enhance the performance or feel of the forum?

for the most part, avoid on frequently loaded pages such as the forums. some flex/flash isn't bad on the main site

3- max # of ads on a page?
depends on the layout, obviously users prefer 0, use as many as you can without them being intruding and you actually making decent profit

4- interviews with professional fighters?

if you can get them

5- should there be a separate forum for chat?

yes, chat helps to maintain a ton of traffic if its built up

6- for those who are familiar with building forums, any ideas on programs or applications to use to enhance the performance or feel of the forum?

what forum technology were you going ot use, vbulletin? you can mod it or pay someone to mod it

Not on the forums. Wouldn't mind the front page because I'd skip right over that.

three. One at the top, one in the middle of the page (or the side), one at the bottom.

I'm using vbulletin...i'm paying $100 / year for vBulletin 4 licenses
 
I do'nt think mods should "edit" your posts aside from remove links and it still have your name at the top. THat's fucked up. Delete it then.

I don't like ads that "get in the way".

I never check the emails I used to join a site. PM's would pry work just as easily.

No flash on the forums, keep it simple. Main page would pry be alright, but don't waste a bunch of money on it as most people don't care one way or the other.
3- max # of ads on a page?
couple banner ads aren't too bad. If you're gonna have a subscription type membership do it like elite and let paying users turn it off

would be interesting

yes, the less rules the better :)

If you do a subscription type membership either do it a one time membership fee. or annual. I'm members of forums that do it both ways. some have different levels of site supporting and you get a "level II" supporter by your name, etc..some just automatically renew every year. usually like $25.

I don't think I'll have an application like plat chat on there...but I think most things should be available for free; not sure if i'll include membership options though

I will def. have a chat forums as it's a general concensus that it will bring more traffic

should i have sub-forums for chat, or one big forum??

i dunno how everyone else feels about it, but music on a webpage is really annoying to me. Like, enough that I would avoid the website.

I agree especialy when people are trying to surf on the DL at work and this music comes on I am like wtf when that happends.

Only advice I will give is this:

Don't be a fuckin' Nazi with the moderation standards. I have quit visiting a Canadiens fan board permanently because they are constantly giving out warnings and bans on trivial issues. Some hot debate is good for a forum, not bad, and you will be getting plenty of that considering that tempers run hot when MMA fans talk about their favorite fighters. Allow plenty of leeway if you want people to stick around on your board...freedom of speech should prevail most of the time (personal attacks based on race/religion, threats of violence against, ect should be the only bannable offenses...not stupid things like 'fighter bashing' like they have on Sherdog).

Good luck with your project, and be sure to let me know when it's up and running...I'll definitely be a member there!

I will make sure that no member gets banned unless they've done something REALLY fucked....banning rules will be very veeeeery relaxed

My forum should be up and running in the next 2 weeks

I have all the banners and graphics ready...still working on some applications for news updates and shit like that but i dnt necessarily like the domain that i have and i want to register a new domain

any ideas?
 
keep it comin guys...I like everyone's ideas so far...I'm really using these ideas for mmy forums and taking everyone's ideas into consideration

try to incorporate words like knockout, mma, or something catchy....I'm making a list and I should choose a domain before Monday and register it.

I also hate how some places will keep your personal info after you get banned, which means you can't delete it yourself or even tell them to delete it because you can't sign in anymore. Idiots.

there will likely be no bannings unless it's something very serious....my forums will be very "loosely-controlled" so to speak

Why not? Even if you just bet on big ticket mma events. Whatever brings the people in. Remember, the more users you have the more traffic. The more traffic the more advertising, all that combined equals higher rankings on search engines.

2. no, clogs things up and annoying after a while
3. i think EF has a good blend
4. yeah that'd be sweet if i liked the sport
5. yeah seperate forum for chat, but don't have too many subcategories keep it slim and basic

i used to run a forum with a few thousand users.. it was a pain in my ass. not enough cash for the amount of time spent on it, plus the overhead.

I'm also using javascript and possibly xHTML for the coding and css for the layout
 
What color scheme would work best with my forums?
