Mermaid 2006

Please note that the above story is completely fictional and is used solely for illustration of the size of the succulent produce ingested. It was enormous. Believe it.

Exactly 3 sweet potatoes were harmed and killed during the production of this program.

:nerd:

You are a nerd, but at least a funny one at that! :lmao:

Hi, Mermaid! Just checing in to see how you're doing. Happy to hear you had a nice visit w/IP & Nelms.......the potato story was funny. I hope you're sunburn gets better, I agree, too, Aloe Vera plants are a mess and if you ask me they stink, too! But I guess it's worth it b/c it works so much better than the bottled stuff. Something else that works well is called Ice Blue, it's a blue aloe vera & vit E gel, smells minty, too. Don't know if you still need it, but maybe incase it happens again (which I hope it doesn't) you can try it out. :D Looking foward to reading more in your journal. Have a great day!

Don't laugh, that's good for me, LOL

Don't worry not going to laugh, Mines six two! But breaking that tomorrow at dinner, I figure I would get it in once a week for now cause the next phase I pretty sure I won't be able to!

There is a pattern here....I'm on day 6 too!! I'm doing a 12 day stretch, so this is the 50% mark for me. I have a birthday bash next Sat for 4 friends (only a :nerd: like me would be happy that all 4 friends' birthdays are being celebrated on the same night, so I can summarize it all into one cheat meal instead of more) which will involve being at a bar for a good portion of the night :martini:

No, I am not going to have a cheat day, but my trainer told me I could. I did the first week and I got completely sick. Though she still says to have a cheat day, I am reserving it for or if I really really want it, I am going out to dinner tomorrow and that will be the full extent of my cheat day and I will have my beer tonight, and drink lots and lots and lots and lots of water after! :)

It's Sunday...

2 people in Iraq are waiting for your update and KNOW what time it is over there... only a few more hours, young lady. :lmao:

Week Commencing 20 March 2006

So here it is, my weekly journal. Having struggled with consistency over the past few months, I needed to change something in order to get back on track. Updating my log daily was good but then I found I would conveniently forget what had happened in previous days, wouldn’t go back and read it (too much trouble) and I couldn’t gauge my progress. All I knew was that I didn’t look any different so something wasn’t working.

Updating a Word document and actually seeing my week’s diet and training on one page feels very different indeed. I’m actually more motivated by the numbers than I had originally thought. I’m sticking to around 1400-1500 cals per day with exception of two days when I’ll up it to 1700-1900, mostly with carbs. I’ve managed 7 days without alcohol and mostly clean (save for the chocolate fixes which I kicked myself for once the sugar rush was over). I bought 70% cocoa dark chocolate but just love it too much to reasonably monitor portions so I’m not doing that again and Saturday I worked, the company provided lunch and the muffins were calling my name.

Friday night was the toughest time. Ate an omelette and went to bed at 8pm to help ignore the alcohol craving. And I even ate pasta on Saturday night! I’m really not fond of it but I had minor cheat vibes and this was the best (worst) I could manage. Also, by Saturday I was pretty tired and felt “depleted” so thought the added carbs would help my Sunday workout. Which it didn’t.

Training was good overall – Nelms and IP gave me confidence that yes, I have good muscle mass under this layer of fat and yes, I can lift heavier than I thought I could. Numbers are motivating so I will religiously record all weights lifted (total weight in kgs – multiply by 2.2 for pounds) and just adding an additional kg makes me feel good. I’ve been asking some of the ladies about their diet and training split and what works for them – I’m struggling to accept that diet (80%) and training (20% of which weights are most important) will work for cutting but I guess I just have to experiment with my own body to see. By Sunday, I was exhausted so lifting was pathetic and wanting to run from the gym and put my PJs back on, I relented and did a 40 min cardio circuit which made it more fun and went by in a flash. Yay.

My masseuse was stunned at how much I have stiffened up over the past month and she worked on me very hard which I loved but I still feel the effects now. I will rearrange my budget to ensure I can afford my weekly/biweekly sessions because having supple muscles really helps with my quality of training.

No weight change from the previous week and the Tanita scale says I’ve increased body fat by 10% which I know is utter BS. I will post more pics when P is around to take some in the daylight.

Logging this way makes for long posts but I hope you all will continue to read it because I need some :velvett: at times and any other constructive criticism you guys can offer.

First, I'm pissed, but not at you. I just had a long reply and the board closed momentarily when I sent it. Not happy.

Anyway... :anvil: :destroy: :strider36 :chainsaw: :happyscra :saw: :kapow: :fistfullo :kaioken: :redhot: :finger:

Ok, I feel better. On with the post. :D

Your week looks good. Something is missing from Tuesday's workout... I need one more leg exercise (step ups or stiff-leg deadlift) and some abs, please. :velvett: :D

I also like your higher caloric days...it will help with your metabolism. So, don't worry about those. I would rather see your low days between 1500-1600, though, and I like your spike at 1900. You are doing a LOT of work with all the cardio and lifting, probably burning 300-500 calories per session. There is nothing wrong with that; however, at 1400 calories, that is only leaving you 900-1100 to "exist" with. That's not quite enough for you. Intentionally set your caloric spike days for leg days. :)

You're doing a great job and have NOTHING to be ashamed about this week. Keep up the good work.

Damn the Tanita scale. It's a good thing IP didn't step on it, or it may have ended up in the ocean. :D

Miss you guys... :rose:  :wavey: :friends:

I have missed your log, girlfriend! But I can see how keeping track of it in one word document makes it easier to look at overall performance for the week.

The Tanita scale's bf% measurement is total BS! I would just look at the actual scale weight as a reference point and nothing else on it. Use a tape measure to take measurements if you must - that's not a bad way to track progress since scale weight doesn't show the difference in body composition. And if you can get the same person at your gym or P to do calliper measurements for you, that would be ideal.

To avoid dark chocolate or mini muffins, maybe you can set some "clean foods" as your treat. I notice you seem to like your protein pancakes. Why not have that regularly on weekends so you still have something to look forward to? I do that with my protein waffles - they're tough to make on a weekday when I have to rush to work, so this way I still feel like they are a special treat when I have them, even though they are just my oatmeal and egg whites in a different form. I also have that same mentality with my almond butter or pecans - I can usually only fit them macro-wise in my diet if I've been good all day so that's my "treat" right before bed: one serving of good fat. I'm not sure if these silly mind games will work for everyone, but it's just an idea. For me, it has stopped the cravings and bad foods calling out my name.

Major kudos to you on your alcohol free week. :garza: I know for vodka lovers like us, it's tough but I think the results will be very worth it

 Not giving up now, just a different format to help me!

You're so right, I LOVE those pancakes. I have just read your recipe for the muffins and I will most definitely try them. An ideal "cheat" would be a couple of warm muffins with a strong milky coffee for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Mmmmm, I think I'll get a waffle maker too....

I know for vodka lovers like us, it's tough but I think the results will be very worth it

It's not the vodka so much as the carb frenzy that occurs the next day. Never mind, the Grey Goose won't see much light of day over the next few weeks. Though I am looking forward to P's company function on Thursday night. Gotta love free cocktails - I'll just have a couple though.

Nutter Nelms!! :wavey: :rose:

Your week looks good. Something is missing from Tuesday's workout... I need one more leg exercise (step ups or stiff-leg deadlift) and some abs, please. :velvett: :D

I know. The gym was so busy Tuesday night that we had to improvise a little. I couldn't even find the step box so threw in a few arms exercises before the cardio. No excuse for missing abs though.

Intentionally set your caloric spike days for leg days. :)

OK, I'll try to plan a little better

Miss you guys... :rose:  :wavey: :friends:

Miss you guys too.... Just not the same around here, especially at the gym. P and I feel the same... :(

For better or worse, :Perk: coming this weekend :mix:

Major kudos for maintaining your no alcohol stretch! Wasn't that article that Bunny posted up a HUGE eye opener?

Yes, having very serious thoughts about the whole alcohol thing.....

I visited a naturopath last night and had a further insight to some of my health issues - those that my regular MD has not picked up in the standard blood tests. I've got a whole load of additional homeopathic remedies that I'll add to my daily list of supps. One interesting discovery was my inflammation of the liver - and then we discussed alcohol, particularly in regard to occasional binge drinking.

I found the session to be very positive except for her opinion on training and heavy weights (too much) and the "high" amount of protein I eat. Obviously I have adverse reactions to wheat and dairy - who doesn't nowadays. She wants the whey to go!

I'll keep you updated on my reaction to the therapy and further testing.

I don't feel like a cow today - last night's gym session was great and the diet tight.

Tonight I have a farewell function for another work colleague. Going Japanese so clean food is easy. Tomorrow night is the big corporate bash but I'm going to feel too guilty to have a free vodka :worried:

WHO said you have an inflamed liver?

My naturopath.

I had some tests (litmus, drops on tongue, iridology, stool etc) and she deduced that I have an inflamed liver. I had orginally gone to find alternative therapies for some hormone issues and she looked at the whole body.

I am sorry to hear about the inflammed liver...that is no bueno. Please keep us updated. NO WHEY huh? That is craziness...

Glad to hear that your diet it TIGHT and your workout went well - keep up the great WORK!! You are doing awesome!

Enjoy your japanese today ;)

So.....what has she said as far as TREATING this inflamed liver? Got me concerned!

I'm going back on Monday to ask some more questions. I don't have all the information I need from her yet. In the meantime I have some homeopathic drops which seem to have caused me to breakout - unless it's my clean diet clearing out the toxins, LOL. Will let you know on Monday.

Inflammed just means it's maybe swollen.... If you don't have any pain. I am almost positive she can deduce from the methods she tested that it is red or hot... the only two other symptoms of inflammation.
Why not just take some anti-inflammatory and see if it helps?
Ohhhh or is that against naturopathy belief systems??

hey hun. How are you today?

Im sorry to hear about your liver... more reason to stay away from alcohol though :)

IMO, it looks like your diet is high protein low carb...when you are dealing with this type of diet....excess protein leaves lots of nitrogen in your body which has to be eliminated through urine. For this to take place, your liver and kidneys do LOTS of extra work to make this happen. SO, maybe the high protein diet has affected your liver . Let us know what the results are....I hope everything will be ok :worried:

In the meantime, chillax(lol) this weekend and have a good one! ;)

*Previous week's journal*

Talk about food panic. Thursday's alcohol led into Friday's diet destruction. Carb frenzy is an understatement and then the subsequent days were higher carb too. I'm now holding a lot of water and am trying to dissipate it by chugging down liters of it.

This is exactly :martini: :martini: :martini: what has been sabotaging my progress right from the beginning - my weekend binges. Sunday we had lunch with friends - I refused the alcohol and chose the better dish. I got some stick for not having a drink and it just makes me not want to go out with people at all.

The weekend's training was not the gym - I helped a friend move so was working hard for most of the day and then slept for 14 hours! A beach walk was all I wanted to do on Sunday.

No weight loss and no surprise. Not very happy with myself. No need for the :velvett: as I've whipped myself silly with guilt. Back to it......

Still waiting for those :Perk:!!

Or did I just miss them....:P

Damn!!! Can't get anything past you, girl ;)

Honestly........I am so embarrassed to post them. I'm still rather blubbery and having not made much progress (when so many others are making leaps and bounds) I just feel so ashamed to post up more fat photos. And after the week I've had, it just wouldn't be motivating for me. I guess I'm still in a :sulk:

No worries though, this too shall pass. I'll snap out of it and I will have a better week.

And then I might post them :worried:

You want to really :velvett: yourself? Since I'm going to give you a pass on this one... Post em ... Yup, post em... You are not very happy with yourself ... well here is your time to say *bam* this is why I'm not happy & me posting my pics WILL keep me motivated to do better next week, b/c the pics are sitting in my log for all to see (and honestly we probably think that are WAY better that what you do anyway :rose: )

I think is would be a huge motivator for you, and well the embarrassment is holding you back from facing this & saying "I AM GOING TO DO BETTER, you'll see..." Then Prove it, not to us, but yourself :) We're just here to cheer you on...

and I say this with NOTHING but love :rose:

:mommakin: Cheer up chicky!

Those pics can't be as bad as mine so ya better anty up or HBB will be huntin you down. (I haven't posted any either :sulk: )

OK, now the weekly thing isn't working for me. Well actually that's not quite true - I do get a very good picture of my schedule and it's much easier to compare week on week so I will continue to do this BUT journalling daily helps the mind. I like to "purge" each day - talking about my mood or motivations whether anyone reads it or not, because that is so closely related to what I put in my mouth and how I train.

So, I have decided to log here daily, copying from my weekly journal :)

This week I'm like a broken swinging pendulum in terms of feelings  then :bawling: then :worried: then :) Fortunately I've discovered the problem and I am having it removed at the end of this month (no, not my brain - though I'm sure some would beg to differ - or my husband, a BC issue)

I felt like utter crap today (monthly) but then tonight I was able to help someone, quite unconditionally and I can't tell you how good that made me feel. Work is OK. The midget boss has backed off, leaving me to control my area - that also feels good.

And then there's Bunny. Mmmm. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who feels like an utter douchebag for bitching about her life when others have such testing times.

Alright, I'll shut up now and log:

Carb cravings are still very high but I've managed (don't know how, LOL) to push through it. Still very bloated - water consumption average - need to up it. My supplements list is currently so long that I am not going to post here on a daily basis - just lots of vitamins, minerals, herbs, enzymes etc.

O.k. now I'm laughing.... I used to have a deaf boss... It was so irritating because I knew no sign language and she would try to talk to me and all I heard was like the panuts show "Mwhaa mwhaaa mwhaaa mwahh"
I think they hire the handycap because they are fun to watch. I know that was bad... *slap upside my head*

Awesome!!! I'm glad you're back to posting daily. You really show a lot of people how to be honest and open. That is a tremendous strength that will serve to help a lot of people! Keep it up!

Whaddup, P?!

Mermaid, this is your log ... I post my life as is, bunch of fun little things along the way ... REMEMBER ... Your life is #1 ... b/c you are living it, no one else is doing it for you ... that is why your problems, issues, matters at hand, seem so intensified ... and that is OK! It helps to put things in perspective sure, then again, it helps to rant, rave, b*tch, vent, GET IT OUT etc...

I don't feel my issues are THAT much worse than anyone elses .. just the cards I was dealt ... so play the hand & play it well ...

I love your log :)

Treil, your a BAD BAD girl!!! even though I totally understand what you mean!

Come on, Mermaid!!!!! POST 'EM!!!!!!!! :velvett:
We're your cheering section - REMEMBER?!?!?! :qt:

Thank you girls

Treilin, at least now I know I'll have a friend in Hell  ;)

Bloody hell. My boss arrived today, quite unexpectedly (so much for backing off) and practicallydemanded me to attend a sales conference dinner tonight and then asked me to book it! So much for planning. Picked a place far away from home so I will have to drive (and therefore not drink) that has awesome seafood. Expensive (which he'll HATE, LOL) but good for my diet. How selfish is that? Still I was so looking forward to sweating at the gym and I get to miss it again.

I will make up for it tomorrow.

Wednesday
Meal 1 – 3 scoop whey, 2 slices seeded sourdough rye, 1 tbsp almond butter
Meal 2 – 1½ cup homemade chicken chilli
Meal 3 – 3oz sardines, 2 slices seeded sourdough rye
Meal 4 – 1oz almonds
Meal 5 – TBD
Totals so far:
1218 cals
P: 39
C: 24
F: 37
Fibre: 31g

Got a problem with bread. Though I have switched to wheat free and dairy free, I still eat too much.

OK, did as I promised:

No alcohol
Ate scallops w/ asian salad and snapper w/ artichoke. Trouble was there was so much olive oil on everything.
Such a late night though - it's 1.30am and I'm overtired.

IP - yes, back to the gym tomorrow, promise :)

CK - I bought some organic sourdough rye bread. It has no dairy or wheat, just rye and seeds (linseed, poppy, sunflower). Good fiber content too. Yummy, unfortunately :p

Ladies - jack my thread anytime you like ;)

My training sucked actually because I am so tired. So off to bed now to repay some sleep debt.

O.k. I had to tell you it was the wierdest dream last night!!!! Nelms, IP, and you were in my dream. Yes I really have no idea what you all look like but I remember Nelms came walking over and I asked you who he was and you told me. The funniest thing though is Nelms you looked like you were so scrawny it wasn't even funny. I literally said,"Reallly, and he does all those work-outs??" I was so confused because Nelms looked like he had never picked up a weight.

How cool! And just knowing us by Mermaid, Nelms, IP. Wow, you seriously need those dreams analysed! LOL We obviously have more of an effect on eachother than we realise.

I hope I didn't look like the Pilsbury dough girl.....

I take almonds and egg whites in before I go to bed. I'm just a very vivid dreamer.
You want to know the rest of the dream??!!
Well my 'Mom' came to my house and asked me to wear my jeans. O.k. I have a 33-34 inch inseam... my mom maybe has a 27... and weighs about 60 more pounds then me. So here she is trying to get my pants on and I look over again and she has my underwear on!!!!! I was so mad I said,"What are you doing??" She said, "I always wear your underwear I like them better." I was like,"Get them off!!!!" So then I turned around any my mother was no longer white, she was black and she had my pants on with a big butt (my mom has no butt), and had them shoved into these hooker boots. I was like,"AHHHHhhhhhh!!!!!"

I fell off the wagon again.
Bread and chocolate. No alcohol.
P came home from his week long trip and kicked my a$$. He said that tomorrow he will drag me to the gym by my hair if he has to and that having "aunt flo" around is no excuse.

Aren't "mer-people" alergic to chocolate?

Maybe if you shake your shells at Mr. P he won't drag you to the gym. ;)

:Perk:

OK, the Mermie is posting updated pics.

Not much change, eh? Still, it's another tool to try and play my mental game. I'm not proud of myself at all. Still I do think I'm brave posing in a g-string for all of EF to see :worried:
