Meal or shake before workout ?

Hi !

It seems that most of you prefer a shake before your workout, but myself, I need a meal or else I just couldn't lift any weights !!:)
By the way I lift first thing in the morning but for you that means in the afternoon since I work the graveyard shift...

It's oatmeal for me too, with some protein with strawberry flawor ( sp ? )
Maybe I'm wrong that some of you only take a shake before lifting...??? :D

Best to add some whey to that oatmeal. There is some recent lit that suggests a little protein or essential amino acids before a resistance training session increases post workout protein synthesis.

I eat a meal. Protein pancakes with egg whites, oatmeal and cottage cheese. There's no way I could lift on a shake - my stomach starts grumbling halfway through, then I get nauseous, then I get tired.

I have the shake after.

Wilson/Spatts, doesnt cooking the whey powder with the oats hurt the protein value? I thought always that such a thing would destroy the protein a bit.

Also, i do not like oatmeal, but i have found that i LOVE grits. Would the powder into grits be tastey or unpleasant do you think?

Add the protein after you are done cooking the oats.

Don't like oatmeal??! OH MY!!! Well at least you like grits. I have mixed several things with grits...but protein powder...I dont think that would be too "tastey"...but its all about numbers.

I am a bit confused (as a few of you have probably figured out by now, this is NO surprise).....This thread says to eat before working out but I read that working out in the morning BEFORE eating is the best. Is it a matter of whether you want to add mass or lose BF?

:) WORKOUT means WEIGHTS! In the morning, don't eat before 'cardio'. DO eat before weights.

How much time do you all have between this workout & meal? I personally usually have some fat & carbs within 60 min of the workout. Will have had a balanced complex carb/veggie/protein meal an hour or 2 before that. Shake is post WO.

Whohoo, my thread has been bumped !!;)

I usually get up and eat and then go straight to the gym. So I guess it's about 60 minutes for me to. I've read somewhere that you need to wait about 1.5 hours for the food to get in to your system, but I feel fine when lifting after 60 minutes of eating some oatmeal. My favorite in the morning would be a handful of peanuts...:p

By the way !! You americans are so spoiled with good food to cheat with !!! You have sugar free this and fat free that so I don't ever want to hear any of you complain about diet again !!!
I can't even find natural peanut butter here, and need to go to Sweden to shop some low fat cottage cheese !!!
OK, my rant for today...;) ;)

Actually that would depend on the Glycemic Index of the food, I believe. The GI is a measure of how quickly the food will cause a rise in your blood sugar. Hence some foods being called, "Quick" - like sugar & some fruits.

You americans are so spoiled with good food
oh, no no no no, you don't get to be the one to complain here! :) We Americans are the fattest on the planet. Those of us on Elite who are trying to eat 'clean' & be exceedingly fit are such a tiny minority. We must deal with friends, family, & co-workers often taunting us with "good" (junk) food, and/or teasing us/ treating us like freaks for our habits. OMG, it is SOO tiresome! I started getting nasty about it when I kept getting comments when they would buy pizza for my department or the company, & I would have my tuna & broccoli. I've been working here 1.5 years, you think you all would freakin be used to it right now! You'd think I sat at the lunch table naked, the big deal they make of what I eat!!

:FRlol: Yes, that's the truth. The average American thinks eating healthy food is some kind of mental disorder.

This "good food" is like a wolf in sheep's clothing. Other than drinking skim milk, I never eat sugar free anything. All those strange chemicals. I'm convinced they put something in there to make you eat the whole box. :) Just give me the real thing - it tastes better, it's more satisfying, and I eat less.

I tried eating before my workout and i felt all bloated, even an hour before.

Thing is some days i do both... Weight-cardio

Still good to eat before if you do weights first then cardio?
Oatmeal is yummy! Do you guys use regular oatmeal? or actual "oats" and mix with egg whites? =then protein powder?

Good Post! :busy:

Formally Confused

Here here! :mix: Same in my department, they look at me like i NEED to eat it, and Almost give me dirty looks for not wanting to eat the "pizza" or cookies that someone made.

They say "don't you have to go to the gym?"

:mp5: :mp5:

I would have some food within an hour of workout even if it was cardio & weights. The reason to do cardio on an empty stomach is b/c you have less glycogen stored in your liver & muscles, thus you burn a relatively greater percentage of FAT for fuel during your cardio - than if your glycogen stores were up.

But when you do weights, you use up that muscle glycogen. Weight lifting is anaerobic in nature - that is the metabolic pathway you use for ATP production when you're doing those short bursts of HARD work. Sooooo - by the time you're done weights & move on to cardio, you should have depleted your muscle glycogen stores somewhat - so you'll have the same benefit of greater fat burn.

so YES, eat! :)

Oh, and I eat plan regular quick cooking oats. Mixed mostly with water, nuked, & some milk

I still think that pizza and italian food (yes Spatts...lasagna counts) are the foods for strength :)

I dont feel full after the postworkout shake... I usually have to eat at least 30 mins later because I get too hungry.

I take a post workout shake and put it on a bowl of cornflakes for fast carbs. It's delicious and it's my treat for the day.
I usually eat a another meal within 2 hours and that would be oatmeal and some chicken or red meat.
Is 2 hours to long to wait before eating ? I don't feel hungry though...

Slow carbs and protein all the way.

If i train first thing in the morning its usually 6 eggwhites + 2 yolks for protein and 60g oatmeal for carbs.

if it is later in the day, 50g oatmeal and 40g protein powder.
