If I do a low carb diet but never actually get into ketosis, lets say I stay like under 40g of carbs a day, will I still lose weight? I am also taking NYC and lots of Green Tea.

You could eat as close to a "zero" carb diet as humanly possible - but you won't lose any weight unless you are eating under maintenance calories.

In other words...someone who eats a low carb diet - but still consumes more calories than they burn is not going to lose weight.

So the short answer is yes - you can eat "lower" carbs (e.g., not a keto diet) and still lose weight.

low carbs on a caloric deficit is perfect ^

Not 100% accurate. Some people, not everyone, can eat the same calories they normally eat, but lose bf when they are in ketosis. I've met a couple of bodybuilders like this, and Dr. Adkins had clients who actually increased calories from what that had priviously been eating, who lost 40+ ibs on the higher calories. For some ketosis alone will burn bf. Bear in mind the metabolic advantage of ketosis varies from person to person. For me, it is about a 1000-1200 calories a day. Meaning, I can lose weight at the same rate eating that many more calories in ketosis than I would if I were not in ketosis. For some people it is much higher than this. There are people who can get ripped on 5000+ calories a day in ketosis. A local guru (who I used to chat and argue with regularly), put one of his clients, a college football player, on a 8000 cal ckd for 8 weeks, and the guy lost over 20 ibs of bodyfat, while maintaining all of his lbm. WHile this does happen for some people, I wouldn't count on it though, until you find out if you are one of those people who can get away with this.

hi guys,

advaik, let me tell you of my personal experience... I have never checked my body fat % or any of that but i will consider myself overly obese, and the max i weighed in was roughly 320lbs, and im only 5'9" to give you an idea. I lost about 20lbs over the 4 month semester in school this past spring by actually eating both less carbs and fat, basically much less calories than i normally would take in, and the only exercise i got was walking to classes.

i read the atkins book when i got home from school just to try to learn something and maybe try to a different approach to my diet. so i began a low carb diet at the beginning of june when my school semester ended and weighed in at about 280. when my body was actually in ketosis, the pounds seriously flew off, and i accompanied it by some aerobic exercise. today, about 4 months later, i weigh in at a hair over 230 pounds. my diet consisted of basically chicken, turkey, fish, beef, cheese, and some not starchy veggies. I recently checked if i was in keytosis, and sure as shit, i was not...im not gaining weight, but its coming off much slower than before. i exercise regularly every other day which might be the only reason im still losing weight, but ever so slowly. but at the start and during my low carb diet, i really really ate alot several times a day. I never counted calories but the weight still came off since i was in ketosis.

my suggestion is to see what level of carbs you can eat before you hit ketosis, maybe its 40, maybe its more, maybe less. as im finding out, its a really low number, and its time for me to start strictly eating very little carbs at all.

but i am still learning about how my body reacts to foods and workouts etc as this is the first and only time i have succeeded in losing weight and actually changing my lifestyle habits. I have to admit my body is probably out of ketosis recently because i have started to eat more veggies and some rice and potatoes ( the things i really miss).

btw, i chew sugarless gum alot which contains sugar alcohols (sorbitol, manitol) and drink beverages with apartame. whats the deal with that? do sugar alcholos effect the body the same as regular sugar? i dont think theres a product out there to to chew or suck on that doesnt contain some type over sugar. because i quit smoking, i really need something to chew/suck on, any ideas?

n3r, I've done some testing on sugar alcohols myself (well at least maltito) and found that even at 50 grams in one serving, it did not kick me out of ketosis and only elevated my blood sugar by 8 ng/dl, and 30 minutes later it droped back to where it was prior to that. Dr. Adkins reported that glycerol did not kick any of his patients out of ketosis either.

Congradulations on your weight loss by the way.

theres so much i want to learn about what ive actually been eating but i have yet to find resources...so im very happy i found this forum so i can maybe learn something, specifically about low carb diets.

i decided tonite that i wanted to strictly watch my diet like when i started so im lookin for some good food options. went out, bought some chicken, pork, cheese, peanut butter.

one of the things im not sure about eating now are the "lo carb 2" bars that only have 3g total carb, 0g sugar. but it has maltitol and glycerin in it....is this a bad thing? also, all these other bars on the market have 20+g carbs in them, but they only say like "3 net carbs" on the package. what about the other non sugar carbs in it though, wont it affect someone on a low carb diet, or are these carbs ok?

are these bars total junk, is there a better solution for a very very quick meal thats filling, and low carb? im in school again, and i have no time to blend shakes, etc

btw, 50 grams of sugar alcohol seems like alot, still its 50 carbs, and i dont really take in that many during the day. I chew dentyne ice (like 6 pieces a day) which has 1 sugar alcohol in each, but i dont know if thats affecting me, or the aspartame i consume in diet soda or an espresso....

geez i got alot of questions.....
