Calories are the most important thing when determining weight loss though. If you consume less calories than you burn, you'll lose weight.. If you consume more, you'll gain. Now what those calories are can factor into your Metabolic rate in the long term, but I'd say overall calories is the single most important factor. But in answer to what should you look at when losing weight, I'd say look at and pay attention to both. You want to know how many calories you're taking in, but you also want to know how much fat and how much protein and how many carbs.
