True, we each see things from our own perspectives. And you're right, that's no big thing. What galled me though, is the way you denigrate those whose opinions differ from yours. Using this woman/child as an example. She should be punished to the full extent of the law. I would also consider rendering her infertile. But we can't just punish & forget. It behooves us to figure out why she did that, to help others avoid the same situation, and to treat her illness if it is that.

Seeking to understand barbarism only legitimizes it, and all the understanding doesn't change the past. The future only changes through action: imprisonment, infertility, destruction prevents this from happening again, not pills. If understanding "why" people do things is so important, why don't we solve the crime problem and all related issues?

Ok, so much going on in this thread, I'm only going to weigh in on a few items:

1. The intelligence argument: I'm with MTS on this 100%. And I'm not talking about 'book smarts' intelligence either, I'm talking about basic common sense intelligence. Anyone with a shred of intelligence who didn't have a moral obligation (police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, ect) to remain behind should have got the fuck out of New Orleans as soon as Katrina hit Cat 4. You know that New Orleans was only designed to cope with a strong Cat 2 or a mid Cat 3, so Cat 4 should have been synonymous with 'run for the F'ing hills!' Now, you're always gonna have a few idiots who think they're tougher than the average joe and will be able to ride it out, but even these should have ran for their lives when it hit Cat 5. Anyone left in the city who isn't an 'essential services' worker, or was physically incapable of leaving, should have been left to die, because all they did was waste millions in rescue/shelter dollars that could have gone to take care of the sensible evacuees and towards rebuilding. {{And all you bleeding hearts who are going to gripe on this can kiss my ass in advance.}}

2. I think social assistance needs to be trimmed WAAAAAY the fuck back, to the point where it is a very unattractive option...certainly not something you can survive on generation after generation.

3. Forced sterilization for anyone who commits an act of child negligence, serious abuse, or abandonment should be drafted into law.
