quitting cold turkey...my mother who is an RN told me that nicotine changes the way the body stores fat cell and that i should expect to put on some body fat in the next few months(right now i'm 5'7 170lbs and 6%bf). Ive been working out religously for 3 yrs and I'm damn happy w/my results thus far. I eat pretty clean even though I'm a bit of a hard gainer and could probably eat anything and not gain to much. Do I really have something to worry about or is my mom just full of shit.....TIA for any advice :worried:

Gaining fat is the least of your worries, smoking is really bad for you, if you gain a percent or two it is worth it you might be saving your life. Besides now that you will beable to breath you can do a little more cardio to help.

Congrats on quitting, dont give in it will all be worth it.

When I quit smoking, I gained 10 pounds!!! (I'm only 5"2...so it showed!) but after 2 years, my body kinda just went back to where it was. My training didn't really change (although as mentioned, my cardio capacity sky rocketed!). I wouldn't worry too much, the benifits greatly outweigh how bad smoking is for you.

Best wishes!!!!

i jus quit a few weeks ago, i feel completely different, i feel healthy now and putting on a few pounds is no reason to not quit.

How long has everyone been smoking for?, and what method(s), are the best to quit?

Ive been smoking approx. 12-15yrs now, not so much a heavy smoker, but a smoker non the less, My wife and I tried quiting over the summer with just nicortte gum. Diddent quite work....

I dont know about everyone else but, I would have no problems quitting, until i have a cocktail! then its a pack in one night!!! I think it will take heavy drugs to get me off the damn things. Anyone try Ziban? HELP!!

I went the zyban route....other than a few sketchy days while the drug loaded up in my system, I highly reccomend it. I smoked for about the same as you, I had never seriously tried to quit before and it was amazing. I have been smoke free for about 2 years now.

Glad to hear it sash., was there ANY side effects to speak of??

yeah...while the drug was loading up in my system, I had acouple of days where I thought I was gonna die...racing heart, blurred vision and a general feeling of anxiety...but....because it's an anti-depressant (welbutrin) I started feeling better. once you star approaching you last few days of smoking (you are supposed to smkoe as usual for 2 weeks and then set a quit day) it makes a weird tingling dry mouth feeling whenever you smoke...they start to taste disgusting.

The weird few days are not average though (i am 5"2 and at the time about 110lbs) so my doc just told me to down the dose for a few days untill my body got used to it. There are potential hazards with it (seizures..... but rare). Check with your doc to see if it might work for you

Nicotine doesn't alter fat storage but it does increase metabolism and decrease appetite. Withdrawal from nicotine will temporarily decrease your metabolism and your appetite will run wild. You'll need to control the urge to eat extra food. It will pass with time. Good luck! Stay strong.

I need to quit smoking. I have asthma really bad plus I'm allergic to smoke on top of that. I bet it isn't helping with my acid reflux at all or my heart condition. My friend Steve says if I quit smoking he will buy me a steak dinner and my roommate Rob says he will pay for dessert.
