Jerk At The Gym/Question At The End.

Sorry morons at the gym thread, this guy gets his own post.

I usually hit the gym up Saturday mornings but decided to go in the late afternoon. Will not make this mistake again. We have two squat racks and a power rack.

Finish cardio, stretching etc go to the squat racks to wait my turn. This fat (but strong) guy in his 50's doing non safety-pinned seated military in the power rack (which is fine) is like: Why don't you rotate with that guy? Take off a plate, add a plate.... you guys squat about the same amount.

So I didn't want to do this because I dont mind waiting to start my workout and I use microloading plates and the warm up sets are kind of annoying when on the 5x5 and it wasn't this kid's problem.. but for some dumbass reason I do it...wasn't the end of the world, but this dumbass at the power rack keeps commenting on the form of the three of us squatting on the two racks and telling people to get out of the way he needs the mirror! I was ready to put a gun to my head.

My entire workout I hear this guy commenting on everything to everybody and having loud conversation after conversation. Later in my workout I am doing Pendlay Rows while he is working near me and I KNEEEEEEEEW it was coming.

After my first set: What kind of rows are those???

I tried to shut him down. They're called Pendlay Rows... 90 degree bent over, deload after every repetition.

His response: You're gonna mess up your back!

Me: No, I'm strengthening my back.

His response: I recommend standing reverse grip rows like this (does the hump u from behind row motion), or supported t-bar rows, those are good.

Me: I try to stick to barbells and dumbells, I don't really like the constricted range of motion of anything else.

Him: Well you see I can put 6 plates on the supported T-Bar and my lats buuuurn. You gotta tear that muscle down. The lower back is the weak link in the chain.

Me: And it's important to strengthen the weak link in the chain, don't you think?

Him: It's all about the contraction! Like these people who say don't use straps on pulldowns?? You gotta use straps I say. But not deadlifts I never use belts on deadlifts, you need strong abs for that. When we use to squat you know after three plates or so we'd put on the belt, for the heavy sets.

Me: (Desparately trying to end conversation) Yeah... it's good to work up to your heavy sets and use belts and straps as needed for those. Best of both worlds. (Probably totally making up parts of the conversation, how could i remember that i said best of both worlds? Why are u still reading this? OK back to the story...)

So I get back to work... the whole time he's his talking is continuing to anyone and everyone...loud, obnoxious, non stop. and I hear him say later on to someone else... you see that there.. that's a texas power bar... that's 44 pounds. All the rest are 41. I weighed every one of them. And the plates? They are all 49 pounds, 46 pounds. They are made in china! And they are the wrong kind of iron, they aren't cast, they are the cheaper kind. I weighed 'em all. You gotta get York, if they aren't York they aren't good.

Moral Of The Story: Don't go to the gym in the afternoon if you want to avoid this kind of crap.

Now here is my question... is there any chance that this guy actually weighed all this shit and that my gym's olympic bars are 41 pounds and the 45's are as heavy as 49?? I mean he's such an idiot... but he might actually have done this. How though? He put every single piece of equipment on the scale? We have at least 10-15 olympic bars in my gym..he weighed every one?

And lastly, if this is true, do I factor it in my workouts or not worry about the minutae and just proceed as normal (which is 99% what I will do.. but it can have some impact on progressing via 5x5 for sure as well).

I need a nap.

I think every Gym has an old bafoon know it all / done it all. Ours is called Bernie. If you totally ignore him (I mean pretend to not even see or hear him) he will go coach some other poor soul.

A friend and I weighed a 45 pound bar 4 times, same bar, and we kept weighing it.

First time it weighed 41, second time it weighed 52, third 47 and fourth was like 48.

He finally figured out that no matter how we held it, we almost had some kind of pressure on the bar causing it to have more weight, or holding it to take weight off. He was probably doing what we did, and didn't try to average it out to see a cause of error.

The variation in plates is why Rippetoe, at some point in SS, says that sets of plates and bars should all be numbered so that a trainee can use the same ones each time. That way, even if the actual amount you're lifting is a few pounds off from what adding up the numbers on the plates (and bar) yields, you're able to microload effectively. So if you think you're squatting 225 but due to variation in plates it's actually X, when you come in next week you'll be certain that you're doing X + 5 or whatever your microloading amount is.

Also, notice that, even if the dumbfuck was right about the plates not being 45 pounds, he claimed they were consistently 46 or 49 pounds. So maybe just use plates from the same batch (you should be able to tell from the lettering/brand) if you want to guard against error a bit.

With all that said, countless people have gotten strong/big without worrying about these things, and the differences aren't big enough to make a huge difference on most lifts.

As far as weighing plates and BB's go you can try to stand on the scale yourself empty handed, and then do it again holding the plate. The differance will be how much the plate weighs.

That is ridiculously logical:)

As per the cynical one though, probably unnecessary. I am ultimately gonna have to test it myself now that the douche put it in my mind, gotta find out the truth.
