Is taurine safe?

Some days ago I have seen a recommendation here touse taurine for pumps and cramps. But isn't it a bad substance forthe heard? I remember all this hypo about redbull being so bad forthe heart because of the taurine – right?

Yes, it is perfectly safe, as it is a naturally occurring amino-acid, and it will help big time with reducing pumps and cramps. Red Bull is dangerous because it has tons of caffeine in it, as well as sugar, which will lead to further stim related issues, but Taurine has nothing to do with that.

Taurine is completely safe. With Red Bull and other energy drinks, it is the high amounts of caffeine that is dangerous to the heart.

Taurine is an amino acid. It is not a stimulant or a hormone. It is often included in energy drinks because it will help increase endurance and prevent muscle cramps. Taurine by itself can not contribute to insomnia.

Here are my 4 main tips to prevent muscle cramps/lower back pumps:

1. Make sure you are drinking enough water through out the day. 5-6L per day minimum. Remember that stimulants (coffee) and alcohol are diuretics and don't count towards your total.

2. Make sure you are taking in enough electrolytes (think sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium)

3. Supplement with 2-5g of taurine per day. Ideally you would put it in the water you drink during your workouts and sip on it through out your workout

4. Often neglected and over looked, make sure you are stretching after each workout and try to incorporate foam rolling a few times per week into your program to help remove lactic acid from tight muscles.
