Is it okay to lay off the training for a month?

To sum this up without making this post too long.....I'm Active Duty Army until 20 Dec then I get to be a lazy civilian (just playing don't take it seriously). I've been in a DOD (Department of Defense) School for the last 11 months. I've been doing ok with my workouts. I have to wake up at 3:30 4xs a week for P.T (physical training) so sleep isn't always what it should be. Well, now im in the last phase of the school where we break up into individual service specific groups (navy gets together, airforce gets together and the army gets together). Well it sucks to be in the army right now because we gotta be hardcore and carry around a ruck sack, a weapon, fill sandbags, dig trenches and a whole bunch of stuff like this and still get up for 3:30 in the damn morning for PT. So I'm up and running from 3:30 until 8 or 9 at night. I can no longer squeeze in 6 meals a day because I can't stop working because I need my protein shake. The platoon sgt aint having it. I cant even sneak away to the latrine because were using damn port-o-pottys. So my question is.........Is it ok to cut out the intense workouts until i graduate because my body is not going to make it and I cant eat enough to be productive. I wish there was something I could do about it, but I cant. I was thinking i could eat 3-4 large meals to compensate for not being to eat 6 meals a day. Should i quit training all together for the next month or just take it slow. Thanks for y'alls help.

Damn goddess, no wonder you were so offended by those retards in the "Should I work out with......"post. I wonder how many of them could do what you're doing right now.
As for your question, the body has a limited ability to recover from intense physical stress. Right now it sounds like you're already taking your body to the limits, trying to train intensely at the same time is probably pushing your luck. I'd take the break and you'll probably come back stronger.
 
Hey, I realize that we've had a disagreement or two, but I'll try and be "constructive" here. I think you'd be fine not training for a month. Hell, running a lot, especially sprints, is pretty good for leg development. Also, carrying all of that shit will probably develop some decent muscle mass in the most of your body, excluding your arms. I know that when I've carried heavy back-packs or people on my shoulders my traps really feel it.

I think that eating 4 "heavy" meals a day should do you alright. Hell, a shitload of calories is a shitload of calories, right? Might not be the ideal, but who, besides the pros(and college students like me), has the time/ability to get in the ideal nutritional profile. Umm, as for the protein shake thing. Couldn't you put some protein powder in a plastic baggie and bring it with you? Then when you go to the latrine or drink from your canteen or whatever you could eat it. Just think, Arnold made significant progress during his stint in the army and so can you!

Other than that, you're still not as tough as a man. :) Just being ornery, don't take me seriously. Good work, girl!

Oh, as an afterthought, why would someone who's married, has a child and who is 28-ish? join the military now? I don't know how old you are, but I'm just assuming that you're 26-28 because that's when I think that folks should have chillins and I'd assume that many folks wait that long. Either way, why sign up after being married and having chillins?
 
I joined the Army at 17 im 22 now. This is my second time in school. I'm prior service. I was active before now I'm a lazy reservist as soon as I graduate. I'm only 22 but I've been deployedto Bosnia, Croatia and Hungary. I've done a lot to be so young and I've served my country ever since 1997. But anyways........thank you for the advice I just feel a bit guilty for not being able to have my workouts and diet straight the way I want them to be. Thanks again.
 
To answer your question Grizzly, I got married and had my son after I had already joined the Army. I was 20 so not all people wait until there 28-ish to do it, but it's probably a better idea to wait until then :)

Now, should I still lift or should I have an month long break. I don't want to go half ass but I might go crazy if I don't work out. I hate not being in total control. How do I keep from loosing muscle? I took me a while to get up to 135. My goal is to be 140 before I start cutting in the spring but it's hard for me to gain weight (I'm in between an ectomorph and a mesomorph). Its weird because I have very little wrists and ankles, small forearms, but very big quads (hams need some work to be proportional). Upper body needs a little more size in my opinion, but I'm working on it. Thanks guys......and you too Grizzly :)

Muscle Memory

Your load is a full one now. Actually working out on top of what all your going through would probably be nothing but overtraining.
There is a wonderful thing for those of us that have worked out a while called muscle memory. A month off is nothing girl, so take it. Its a big misconception that you lose your muscle gains that fast, your not going to lose anything in a month.

I always take 1 week off after 8-10 weeks of training and after competitive season ends I take off minimum of 2 weeks, usually 3.

So don't fret, your going to maintain the muscle you have just with the work your doing.

Thank you, that's reasuring, but I'm going to miss working out so much. I know everyone on here would probably go crazy if they didn't work out! I think I'll lift on the weekends. Upper one day and lower the next then just try to get lots of sleep and food during the week. I have to go to bed at 6:30 from now on....I need 9 hours of sleep. This is throwing a monkey wrench in my EF time :(

I've actually thought of taking a month off on purpose. Don't think I can handle it mentally though. Par Deus has written a very interesting article on intentional detraining. The theory goes something along the lines of: training causes changes in muscle-fiber composition to more type I fibers, detraining will cause a favorable rebound in muscle composition to more type-IIB fibers.
So look at this as an opportunity rather than a hindrance to your training goals.

I now a guy who is huge.....his formula is this..........2-3 months training...........1 month off..........


if you to do something.......do the old jogging, for 30 minutes.......and finish with some pushups and crunches.
