Is hammer strength comparable to free weights??

Nothing is like free weights because dumbells/barbells require a great deal of control and work that machines do for you. That said, machines have their place in workouts. Some people use machines for a exercise at the end of a routine when you are starting to get tired, but still want that extra work.
 
I know jay cutler said in an article he used pretty much all hammer strength so that he could stack the weight and not worry about getting an injury..
 
They have there place. Some of there equipment is really nice in that you can hit muscles from angles that are difficult with free weights. I really like some of there back,chest and shoulder press stuff.
 
Hammer strength stuff is more isometric exercise that isolates that muscle group, but dumbells require a lot more muscle groups to get involved. Both should be used I believe.
 
I like to use machines towards the end of my workout to blast the blood into the muscle. You can do heavy sets in the 8-12 rep range and get a massive pump.
 
I like machines and smith machine work to finish but free weights as the "meat n potatoes" of the workout. Interned a bit with the cincinnati bengals and they use a lot of machine work in order to stray away from injury while still being able to push optimal amount of weight to grow (Jay Cutler-esque)

Yea that's more why I like them. I can stack the weight heavy and get higher rep range and not get hurt I do switch it up though often. Different reps, weight, and type of movements.
