The proper way to tip is sans tax (without tax).

Hence, you get a total bill of $106 (6% tax), you will tip on $100, based on how you felt the service was. In NYC, as dullboy can attest, most waiters assume 15-20%. I have seen horrible service and the gratuity was automatically added at 20%. It's borderline pathetic.

I'm going to get a drink and find a dirty hooker on 5th avenue.

Yeah seriously what the fuck is the deal with that shit!? I dated a black dude for a minute and that shit seriously pissed me off. First date I was pretty sure he didnt tip, but I wasnt watching the money too closely since I felt that would be rude. But by the 4th date I realized homie was flat stiffing the server. Not a fucking penny. No way I'm letting that bullshit pass without saying anything about it. He didnt give a rat's ass that the person serving him made half the federally mandated minimum wage. His only real response was he (the server) should get a real job if he wanted to make more money and that he (my date) "didnt owe that guy shit".

Shit that STILL pisses me off.

I have no experience with this particular phenomenon, however, I can attest that the more money people make, they less they tend to tip/donate. Whenever someone is seriously sick, at my job, a collection is taken up, along with a get well card. The lowest paid people on the floor will always donate, while the $100K plus engineers & sales people will not even donate a toonie.
I'm friends with an architect in T.O. He's making close to $250K, yet when we play golf, or eat together he never tips.

that's bad, but don't get too angry over it. finding a way to make him look like a cheap bastard (i.e. trying to make a media story out of it, if they care enough) seems fine. but as for confronting him about it...no. leave that be.

Until I read this I had completely forgotten my fiance kept a record of his tips for several months back when he was delivering pizzas 3 & 4 years ago. I asked him about it last night and he experienced exactly the same thing as the person quoted above. He was careful to give everyone exactly the same level of service for months in order to fairly judge the differences. His average tip from black people was less than a dollar and from whites it was about $2.50. He says he thinks a lot of the black people didnt know they were supposed to tip (which is one of the conclusions of the study above) and some clearly knew tipping was customary, but didnt want to tip.

I waited tables for years before stumbling into what I do now. When I lived in Philly, I would get tables that tipped like shit, I would have to say the majority of which were black, that was at a Ruby Tuesday's. Kinda low class. When I moved to Utah, I worked at two of the best restaurants in the state, both have been featured in international magazines. I'd say I averaged 20+% from all customers, aside from Mormons and lesbians. Both were 10% at best. Even Euro's knew to tip at those places. I personally think it's upbringing. I've worked for every penny I've ever earned. I'm still paying on a ton of them I haven't earned yet.

It's not so much a race issue as it is class. Go wait tables in Dewey Beach, DE when the NASCAR race rolls through. White trash that has lived off of the gov't their whole lives will do the same as brosephs and brosephettes that have done the same in the city.

Tipping has absolutely nothing to do with culture and tradition it's a personal choice. The price includes service, if you feel you would like to give more then that's up to you.

I find it hilarious that some of you feel pressured and are expected to giving more than the bill total.
