How much Dextrose PW do you guys take while cutting?

JG1

New member
Just wanted to get some opnions.

Currently am only eating carbs on training days (Friday, Sunday, Tuesday) for my first meal (1c oats, 7oz chicken, fish oil, 200mg r-ALA) and my second meal which is my PW shake (75g dextrose, 50g whey, 200mg r-ALA), the rest of the day I'm go carb-less. On my non-training days I just eat protein/fat all day.

So on my training days I'm taking around 135-140g carbs, and on my non-training days I get close to zero.

Debating whether or not I should lower the carbs in my PW shake....or perhaps since my carbs are so low I should keep them the same PW cause there will be no spill over into fat?

What do you guys think? 75g dextrose PW too much while cutting? Maybe reduce it to around 50g or so?

bro, one of the main things that you should do is blunt the insulin response during diet phases. Insulin is known to cause upregulation of fat-storing enzymes; that being said, I think that 75g is way too high.
I am currently on a cyclogenic keto diet and take only about 10-20g post-workout, depending on how many grams of carbs I intend on consuming for that day.

When I cut for 12 weeks the first month use 75g dextose postworkout and the 2nd and 3rd month I use 35-50.

I use 80g Postworkout while cutting.

You take in any carbs pre-workout like I do with my first meal? On my non-training days I'm going pretty much carbless.

JG1, this is what I do, pre-workout -apple. Postworkout Pro/Carb shake. Next meal same ratio but solid food. I would skip the first meal carbs and just have an apple. Then have 2 Carb meals postworkout, that's the most important time IMO.

How long after your PW shake do you eat the pro/carb solid food meal? 80g carbs, 50g protein?

So basicaly if I eat breakfast at 8:30am, have some chicken and flax (8oz chicken, 1Tbs flax, 1tsp fish oil), and I train 11:30am. So around 11 have the apple and train 30 minutes later?

After the second PW meal you go carbless threwout the day as well?

I also like a piece of fruit pre-workout(with fiber), an apple orange or pear. If you are really concerned about it, have 15 grams psyllium fiber with it. This is regardless of what people say about simple sugar pre-workout, I think the fiber slows absorbtion and i always feel better if i do this. I have learned to keep your calories as long as possible when cutting. This keeps muscle fullness best for me. I would keep your dextrose at 75 grams until u stop progressing, then, and only then you could reduce it slightly, but never eliminate it IMO. I also agree with the carb/pro meal about 2 hours after your dextrose/whey postworkout shake, as long as that meal is not immediately before bed.-WULF

BTW, you hit any PW cardio? Or just morning cardio?

JG1, I usually have the Postworkout#2 meal when I start to feel hungry which is usually around an hour to 2 hours, but will not wait longer than 2 hungry or not. Your 8:30 meal looks great. And the apple and timing as well. I just started incorperating 20min cardio postworkout because I'm trying to loose some holiday pounds, but if I were happy with my bf i would just stick to the morning cardio. And yes if I must train early in the day I will have no carbs after postworkout#2 meal. I will keep it Protein after the solid carb/pro meal (no fat) just in case I still have insulin present in the blood. Then will incorperate some moderate fat/pro meals till bedtime. Not as high as I would early in the day. The best thing would be to do your cardio in the am eat pro/fat all day then train in the evening and have your carb/pro #1,2 meals then hit the sleep. However, I know many have schedule's that don't allow it, like me (bartender). Another recommendation is to do your workout first thing a.m. cardio after then have your Postworkout meals, then protein/vegies, then switch back to protein fat.

Dialtone, www.supplementsdirect.com has dextrose 11lbs for $10 bucks. That's where I get mine till I find a better deal.

Wulf, I agree. Although too much fiber may bloat you out during workout...don't know haven't tried it. I have also had no probs having that carb/pro meal right before bed, actually have had great results. Just something to think about?

If you live in city that has any type of beer brewery-check it out. They are usually more than happy to give their dextrose away cheap. Miller hooks me up, I got 50 lbs for 5 bucks.

Solid,

How are you measuring out 80g of Dextrose from Supplement Direct? I know the labeling is wrong (1/3c=75g dextrose), and I've been using 1/2c (bout 70-75g dextrose). Is that what you're using too....1/2c of their dextrose?

yeah I just use a more rounded scoop, just estimating 80g, not being to particular, and I always have a tendency to have a heavy hand.

Solid,

Forgot to ask you....do you do any kind of carb-up/refeed/cheat day once a week while cutting? Many say on a low carb diet you need a refeed day once a week for leptin levels...although a cheat day would accomplish the same thing.

Or do you just diet strict all the way threw?

don't you guys have a bulk store where you are, you can get 5lbs of dextrose(corn sugar) for $3.00. no need to order anywhere.

definately have a cheat day once a week. Hmm let's see yesterday had a whole box of cereal, went to chinese for dinner(PF CHANGS- the best) and stopped at Cheesecake factory for desert, got the brownie sunday which included 2 huge brownies, 6 scoops of Ice cream, a ton of whipped cream, almonds, and hot fudge. Of course I shared it with a few other people....well sort of...lol. Then woke up 3 times and ate during the night, yeah I make a whole day outta my cheat days.

Solid,

One other thing I forgot to ask...but I think I know the answer too anyway. You first PW meal is high GI (dextrose), and for your second PW meal you eat low GI carbs right?....not high GI again?

50 grams post weight training... cutting or bulking your muscles can use that.

yes, that is what I do. Although I have been told to have white rice for that meal, I just don't like it. I love oatmeal, so I stick with it. Just take your ALA bro, and you'll be fine. As long as your basically in a depleted state, these high carb meals will not be stored as fat.

Agreed!

Solid,
For your second post workout meal you have oatmeal. What do eat as your protein source?

I was having 1 large yam and chicken, but was considering doing oatmeal b/c I can more acurately measure it. Don't know if I should eat chicken with the oatmeal.

Cool, I've been using oatmeal as well for the second PW meal. I'm not a big fan of white rice eaither, unless I'm eating sushi :p. I use the oatmeal to make my protein pancake.

BTW, I do wonder though if a solid high GI carb would be better for this meal. Seems it would do a better job at replacing glycogen then a low GI carb...although the 75-80g dex right after the workout should cover that, so I'm not sure if it matters for the second PW meal.. I also take r-ALA with both meals.

your on the right track bro, keep it up and you will see great things. I'm with you on the sushi, had some last night...I'm addicted, can't wait till next week.:p

Do you feel the oats do a good job at refilling the glycogen, or maybe something more high GI (besides rice)...maybe Cream of Wheat would be better?
