You just don't understand how global economics and global tax policy works.

If the government of India sent you an income tax bill for $2,500 would you pay it?

And if you wouldn't (as I assume you wouldn't), why would you expect a non-US entity to pay a non-US tax bill? Just because the company's name is "GE", "IBM" or "Boeing" doesn't mean every entity it creates across the world is taxable by the US government.

This is horrible.

See, I have as much resentment of people who abuse the system (particularly those who pump out babies just for the sake of increasing benefits) and "generational" welfare families. It's sad, it's sick, it's not healthy, etc., etc. But this shit ... it hits EVERYBODY and there are people who genuinely need the benefits, who have health conditions that make it impossible to work (yes, I know all you able minded and bodied folks cannot imagine being so messed up you can't work but it happens to good people, and living with/off family isn't always an option).

I have a friend who has multiple mental health issues (despite being very intelligent) and multiple degenerative health conditions. She physically cannot handle the demands of a job, period, and even if the job is just mentally demanding her mental health problems preclude her doing that. She's a good person who got handed a shit sandwich for life. Because her medications, 90% of which are psychoactive drugs, cost sooooo much -- upwards of $2,000 a month -- her food stamps have been cut to a grand total of $16 a month. She only gets $1,000 a month cash and her rent alone is $290, she needs a car to get around (public transportation in my state unless you're right in Philly SUCKS) she has to pay electric and phone and everything else like the rest of us.

The system has to treat everyone the same, judge them and accord them benefits by the same standards. So laws that reduce benefits reduce them for everyone. Maybe it drives a few to find what work they can but the rest just have to seek out food banks and learn to live on cheap calories.

So she takes $2000 in psychotropic meds and still cant function enough for a job? WTF do the meds do for her then? She can't sit in a computer for data entry, become a school crossing guard, anything?

I would have thought you would have more compassion for mental health issues, but apparently you're as closed minded as the rest of the culture. So just to tell you how fucked up someone on SSD can be (not that it's any of your-- or Zwhit or Plunkey's -- business but she'll never be on this website so:
1. She cannot stand for more than a few minutes at a time, or walk any real distance, steps and inclines are particularly difficult. She's had a total of 13 operations on her leg since she was 10, most before she was 18. She was born with a congenital birth defect of the knee and had her kneecap surgically removed by the time she was 13. She had an allergic reaction and rejected the artificial kneecap. BTW, she's also allergic to codeine and morphine and their derivatives so imagine going through that without painkillers when you're just a kid.

2. Her tendons and ligaments are degenerating, she's also having problems with her "good" leg and both arms, but particularly her dominant arm.

3. She is a bipolar schizophrenic and her condition is very difficult to manage, there are meds she simply cannot take and whenever she has to go through a med change it takes upward of six months to a year to finalize things. She also has severe anxiety issues. She had to stop working when she started having panic attacks that caused her to faint at the bench (she's trained as a lab tech).

So, no she can't be a school crossing guard and since her tendon condition extends to her wrist and elbows she can't do data entry.

Considering her health problems, which have given her an award of SSD, working a FULL TIME minimum wage job would give her less than her cash benefits AND she would lose her health coverage. Currently her family and friends (including my husband and I) are helping her pay for groceries so she can remain independent.

You people who are healthy have NO FUCKING IDEA what it's like to NEED help and keep having it taken away and then hear perfectly healthy people who have never suffered a day in their lives gloat over how great a reduction in benefits is. Congrats on being small minded, stone cold unsympathetic and lacking in basic human compassion. Most of you have more compassion for dumb fucking pets than your fellow human.

I'm not trying to be a bitch I was genuinely confused about how she could be on so many meds with no results, the physical ailments I never asked about and they do sound very debilitating. I work with a bipolar schizophrenic woman/mother and she has other medical and mental health issues on top so I do know how hard it can get.

I never said no one deserve help, I'd love to take benefits from the parents I work with and give them to people like your friend, some people truely need it.
