Help with CKD

Hi everyone, I have a few questions regarding carbs and the CKD diet. To start off I have diverticulitus and I need to keep my fiber up so I eat 2 low carb high fiber wraps (7g fiber each and 3 net carbs) per day. I also eat 2 teaspoons of milled flax seed that I grind in my coffee grinder. What is the nutritional value per tablespoon of milled falx seed? Am I having too many carbs on a daily basis? The wraps and flax seed are the only carbs I eat except for whatever are in any green veggie I eat throughout the day.

Thanks!!

Flaxmeal is a staple in my diet. All of the carbs are fiber so eat liberally. Yesterday i had 16 tablespoons of flaxmeal. It will absolutely not knock you out of ketosis and will keep you clean as a whistle.

Make sure it is flaxmeal and not flax seeds. I would take in more flaxmeal and green vegetables and remove the wraps. Most likely you are not currently getting over 30grams of non-fiber carbs but with those wraps you are pushing it close i bet.

Of course the best way to solve this is with ketostix. Get them at a pharmacy and check your ketones.

What is the difference between flaxmeal and flaxseeds? I was assuming that flaxmeal was just ground up flaxseed?? How much fiber is in a tablespoon of flaxmeal? Thanks for the reponse!

correct, flaxmeal is ground up flaxseeds. You can get both at the grocery store and they are usually right next to each other so it's easy to grab one instead of the other.

4 grams of fiber in each serving of flaxmeal. The standard serving size is 2 tablespoons. Each serving also provides 4.5 grams of good clean polyunsaturated fats and 3 grams of protein. I consider it one of the most important parts of my diet. Highly underrated. A must on a ketogenic diet.

What are your thoughts about protein shakes while doing CKD? I currently have 2 Isopure no carb shakes per day, one after my fasted cardio in the am and 1 after evening workout.

I have 2 or 3 whey shakes a day. Just make sure there are no carbs (i don't know what isopure is)

Whole food is always better, but there is nothing wrong with protein shakes on a keto diet.

How much fat should I be eating per day. I weight 225 with about 15-20% bodyfat. Currently my diet looks like this:

Zero carb whey isolate protein shake with 2 scoops iBCAA following 30-45 minutes of fasted cardio. (about 25 g protein)

4-5 egg's (mixture of whole eggs with eggbeaters)

snack 5-6 oz chicken breast

snack 1 brat (mainly for the fat content)

dinner usually chicken or beef with a vegatable (green)

Zero carb whey isolate protein shake following workout w/2 tablespoons of milled flax seed.

After writing this down it doesn't seem like very much food. I am also doing PP's fat loss stack.

What you need to do is first calculate your maintenance level of calories, then subtract an amount appropriate for losing weight.

Bodyweight x 12 is a good simple formula.

Then calculate your protein requirements. There are competing theories on what you should do here. I personally would either do LBM x 1 or bodyweight x .08.

Use either of these and that is your # of protein GRAMS. From here, all the rest of your calories should then come from fat.

So I guess I shouldn't be afraid of fat... Have any good suggestions for getting more fat into diet? I will be increasing my milled flax intake from 2 tablespoons to 6 tablespoons per day.. this should help with the fiber and fat. Any other suggestions?

If you want to do this diet you have to drop that fear of fat. Bacon is your friend. Ground beef is your friend. Olive oil is your friend. Add in salmon and your flax and you cover the entire fat spectrum and have a nice healthy mix.

Your body will be running on fat instead of sugar, you need to feed it fat to make that hard adjustment. Calculate your cals correctly, maintain that calorie deficit and you will burn stored fat. It's all math.
