No matter what I do in life, I can at least say I had abs at some point. I'll cherish this picture if I ever turn into an obese fatty:

yes... yes I did, actually i'd witnessed said abs before but never the depth and thickness and leaness that I witnessed for my comps. I was quite taken aback at how simple diet and depletion would take my body to a place that it had never gone before. I did it mostly alone but I hand out my hand to Sassy and QuadSweepsSister for the time they spent helping me over and over again, answering all my pms and such.

In the end, You can have someone write it out for you in bold red, hour by hour but if you don't do it yourself than no one will and you won't accomplish that goal you set forth to accomplish.

doesn't matter how damn good the trainer is, how damn good the person that prepares your diet is... CAN YOU DO IT? that is the question! And that is the question I ask my chicks and gals that I train. I can guide them, give them info, steer them in the right direction... but I can't make them do anything. THEY HAVE TO WANT IT.

Silly bodybuilders and their "abs" and "reps". Sure, they may look pretty and stuff, but where's your core strength at? Can you do bent-over GMs at 600lbs for triples? Box squats over 500lbs?

You should try a Metal Militia workout for a few weeks and see how you fare.

hard to have abs natty (for me anyway), but easy with some help.
main problem is stress of living an actual life (as oppossed to pro BB'er) causes you to spit out cortisol, and abdominal fat is cortisol dependant (like love handles are estrogen dependent)

Honestly Samoth, I did very little ab work at all, most of all work was a core work that dealt with gm's, squats, and dl's. I may have added in some ab work once every week or every other week. I built my core mostly thru my PL'ing training and woking some serious core work. (core work means having to freaking squat and gm, not some pansy ass crunch)

its easier to just have abs and muscles lol

I work out for myself, not to 'show off' to a bunch of strangers. I don't give a damn what people think of me or my physique... it is my vice, and I am the only judge and critique of it. When I have abs, as opposed to the ab I currently have damnit, I'm still a 33" waist because it's all core. I never like having a gut either, because it's always from me eating like shit or not working hard enough.

My outline is starting to fade but its because im on a bulk, i have a feeling i'll shed the pounds off in no time when i cut.
 
What do y'all do for abs? I got one of those "ab wheel" thingers - just a plastic wheel with a rod thru it. Seems to be treating my abs nicely. Also do weighted situps on a decline bench. But no matter what I do, my lower two abs never pop out. I know diet plays a huge role in this, and I guess because of that I'll always have a measly semi-4-pack. I've been eating clean, but eating a boatload of clean trying to bulk a bit. My lower abs love to retain fat.
 
Yes. Now they only look like that when I suck in and squeeze. LOL. At times, it looks like I swallowed a butterball turkey. I like the bigger muscles though.

Now if I could only do just one rep without having one hand supine... it seems so easy, but it's damned hard, lol.

I can get 10 maybe 12 reps DL'ing 315 but I need straps. I can maybe get 3 or 4 without them. My grip sucks. Stupid T-rex forearms...

I was the same way when I was BBing. I switched over to PLing (Westside and Militia) and incorporated grip work. I've never used straps since.

(Hey, give it a shot, grip strength can be important and stuff. Just look at Priest's hand muscle growth thingy, lololol.)

ive got between a 34 and 36 in waist now. 36 is definitely loose, but 34 is slightly uncomfortable.

I probably have the worst diet of anyone at Elitefitness (fast food at least once every day) and I still have these abs at 40. I'm never going to be big 5-10 195lbs but the chicks love the abs.
 
good abs and chest bro - but u need to build up those shoulders. might be kinda hard for you, cuz i think you were born with that skinny thin build shape (ectomorph?). Us mesomorphs are opposite, easy to get broad shoulders and chest - but harder to get abs.

You can easily thicken the abs up to make the obliques look even narrower, wont physically happen, but the illusion is still there.
 
I actually get abs kinda easily. My arms and abs always are the first to lean out. If I gain fat.... it goes strait to my hips and ass(yuck!!!!) That's why I run sooo much. It's the only thing that keeps my lower body looking lean. If I didn't run, I would have a 28 inch waist with 40 inch hips. It's disgusting. Gotta RUN RUN RUN!

Why not just eat less calories for your diet?

I know what you mean though about women sometimes having an easy time with abs but a hard time with the ass. Women always seem to have a hard time with the ass, LOL

I promise. I know what you mean.... but no matter what eating style...diet.. whatever.. if I don't run or do something similiar, I don't look lean.
I have been working out since I was very young. My dad was very into sports and my uncle still runs marathons and bikes a TON and he is 65y/o.
I have always been a lean eater. My parents never allowed me to have junk so I never developed the junk habit. Actually, if u look back on the women's threads...when I was new, I came here because I was trying to gain muscle and weight. I needed to up my cals. I am finally at a good spot. Cutting them would be bad. I can get very small...fast BUT my legs will not look lean without good leg cardio(running or something similiar) about 4 days a week. I just have that crazy body type.

for the lower, I found that hanging leg lifts (start with knees bend then work up to straight legs) worked them the best.

I also did massiave amounts of crunches, sets of 50 for up to 200 per day. Weighted crunches. Plus some of that ab roller nonsense with the wheel (least effective in my opinion).

that's fair enough. i haven't maintained the discipline needed. i was on track like over 2 years ago, but i got stoned. lmao. also, i blame the middle east. now i'm being a good boy, but i'm also skinny as fuck and haven't worked out since 3/2004 (excluding the last 2-3 weeks back in the gym). thus, i'm hoping to walk the line and shed the remainder of this small "gut" (guessing i'm at 13-14%?) and lean out in general, but while also adding some muscle mass back. even eating a clean 1700-2000 calories a day is a chore. and that may just barely be enough to go above maintenance and gain some mass (i'm about 155) back, depending on my overall activity level. hopefully things like cardio and yohimburn make some difference.

and this notion of the superiority of strength and doing something strictly for one's self, while fine (and something that i appreciate because i want strength), is ultimately no better than lifting to look good for both yourself and others. if you try to justify it on an objective basis, you will fail. so do your thang and do it well, whatever it is.

if I were you I'd start out lifting heavy and bump those calories up and just resign yourself to the fact that you'll be a little soft throughout the fall/winter.

Then about feb/march time, cut back on the diet, add in some cardio, and melt that fat off revealing all of your hard earned results.

I use caffeine a lot. Before every workout to give me a little boost.

When I am starting my spring cut, I use a lot of thermos. I was using all the AFstore stuff for a while. I think i can acheive the same results now on my own without it, but I believe it helped me before I knew exactly what to eat and what not to.

I did the same with ripped fuel for a few years, then I started jumping up in the middle of the night, I got off all that stuff ASAP. I didnt' want to end up like Smurfy...

The wheel is good for core strength and will help build/ tone a bit, but it won't help you look good as much as crunches. It will help with strength more than crunches though.

Orb... there is one reason I work out: Girls.

If peeps are about strength, I am happy for them. I could care a less about it - as long as I can move lift a chic up high enough to drop her on my dick... I am golden. :)

So... for me... it's what it takes to make the girls drool. Plain and simple. If that means looking the an A&F boy... fine by me. Don't be hating when I show up to a party full of meat heads and all the fine ass girls want to see JH1s core.... and oooohhhhh and ahhhh over definition.

but seriously, I did better with serious core work, You would be amazed at what it does for you. No need to do umpteen sets of crunches tuts... Work that damn core and make it stronger!

I only did abs ever other week ... sometimes did it once a week, You can crunch all you want, that won't make those abs come out. Its your diet, the layer of fat that covers your abs. Everyone has them... most just don't even know they are there.

That being said, a solid core is a wonderful thing. I've found that the more I strengthen my core (no... not crunches... but weighted ab work) The more I can squat and shizzle... the less stress on my back.

Nothing worse than some fatty bozos who are too lazy to diet down and show what their gym efforts are all about. Why spend all that time in the gym if it doesn't show. Yeah, you might be strong. Big deal. That really comes in handy sometimes doesn't it? Fact is, you put me and some powerlifter in the same room and ask people who is stronger, they will always choose me simply because I look like I am. Only way he can prove different is to lug in a rack and barbells.
