hey guys, i just had my tonsils taken out about 5 days ago (ouch) and i haven't been able to eat anything...all i ate the first 2 days were popsicles and icecream...i know i know, but i couldn't eat solids...since then i've been able to eat soft foods but am having a really hard time getting enough calories, especially from protein...the doctor told me not to be surprised if i lost about 10 lbs!! hopefully i won't lose that much but i do know that what i do lose will be muscle and not fat....boo hoo...anyways, the doc said that i should be able to eat normally and resume workouts about 2 weeks post-op....so basically i'm wondering if i'm going to lose everything i've worked so hard for these past few months?? this really sucks...and i hate not working out....i don't feel like myself....if any of you guys have any suggestions on how to get back to normal quickly i would really appreciate it...thanks in advance....ladybug

Rest your body...don't go back till Dr says so...it sucks but it is best for you..and get some shakes in you girl!!!!!!

oh i forgot to mention...i am drinking protein shakes...but i don't like to drink more than like 2 a day...any other suggestions of how to get back strength-wise?? (after the 2 week period of course)

Just start back slow..your strength will be down some..but after a few workouts you will be fine..

HEy girl - I know where ur coming from -- I had some periodontal work done on Fri 12/14 where connective tissue was taken from the top of my mouth and used to rebuild my gum line on the right side of my mouth, both top & bottom. So not only could I not chew on the right side of my mouth, I couldn't let anything touch the top of my mouth -- so I've been living on protein mix, cooled off nuked egg whites & juiced vegetables.

Most of the weight you would lose I would think would come from water. Two weeks off the diet & out of the gym won't leave you a frail, muscle-lacking woman. I've been using Isopure with the 25g carbs for breakfast, maybe throw a banana in the blender, Myoplex Lite w/ fewer carbs during the day, and Isopure w/ no carbs or fat for post workout. I also mixed in some soy yogurt for variety. I threw flax oil in a couple times of day for good fats and most of my meals I also threw a pile of stuff into my juicer ($30 at KMart) to get my vegies. Except for the heavy protein shake use, use of the juicer for a couple weeks was similar to running one of those detox diets -- resupply enzymes and all the great stuff that your diet maybe missing from a restricted diet (e.g. only eating dark, green leafy vegies).

I wouldn't get too hung up about loading protein mix for a week or two -- You'd be amazed what you can throw in the blender w/ it! And the juicer is something that I like to add into my diet every 2-3 months just to run the "detox" thing.

And actually you're very lucky - once the tonsils are gone, they're gone. I have 2 more surgeries I have to go thru for my gum! :(

I had that done last Sept & it was the best thing that every happened to me! I have not <knock wood> gotten another ear infection or strep throat (both used to be annual or so) and very few colds!

I lost about 8-10 lbs & felt the same way (NOO! Not all my muscle!) Amazingly, my biceps were still there! A trainer friend told me that 'trained' muscle won't atrophy so quickly as if I weren't conditioned. It somehow was mostly fat & I dropped a jeans size.

(The reason it changed my life is b/c it got me interested in nutrition to get & stay lean).

Definitely don't go back to exercise before the doc says b/c there is a risk of bleeding - since you have no stiches. In the mean time, I feel for ya! By 1.5 weeks I was getting antsy, but you'll be back to it soon!

thanks you guys for the helpful advice...i just hate lying around all the time...i feel so UNproductive...i can't wait to get back to my regular routine...
