Well, let's look at the current realities - the US has millions of people in jail and under supervision for drugs. In fact, we have a higher percentage of people in jail then any other country period, and drug enforcement is a big part of this.

Yet drug use continues unabated.

Some Middle Eastern countries have Draconian punishments for drug use, yet Iran, for example has rampaging heroin use, even in spite of very harsh. punishments.

Yet drug use is rampant.

I can't speak to UK policies but I imagine they are the same or similar as US - maybe less jail-intensive.

However, from the above body of evidence, we can safely conclude that enforcement will never eliminate the drug problem, certainly not if any semblance of liberties are to be preserved. In the Middle east, liberties are few, yet drugs are there.

The only answer is 100% legalization of everything.

that is fair enough, I agree, but after it was legalised how would it be distributed? in a pharmacy or where?

obviously poverty/lack of educatio/prospects is a big cause, but not the only one, as plenty of white middle class males/females do it

I would say myself make it legal, but poeple have to sign away any rights to medical/police/government help if they wanna do it.

Well, how is alcohol distributed? bars, pubs, liquor stores etc. Drugs could be sold through conventional distributin means - at least then you could have some oversight as to purity.

Consider that the average street asshole could sell you cocaine cut with finely ground fiberglass. Yet alcohol is regulated as to content. Purity is a real consideration.

As to causes - yes, escapism is a huge part of it. So is social acceptance. Drug use and alcohol use occur for basically the same reasons; there isa gigantic body of evidence (through alcohol consumption) of why people take drugs.

As for signing things away - here in the US we don't have a socialized/national haelthcare situation, so that wouldn't really be necessary, but I see your point. As for police - they should only be invovled when someone commits a crime, so I don't see those as enormous obstacles.
