Exercise Advice

As said above -- if you eat to FUEL your body, the workouts you do will respond in kind. Don't worry about the leg lifts - worry more about giving your body the "gas" it needs to fuel the leg lifts. The rest will fall into place.

YES! Its all about what you EAT!!!
I had an accident and couldn't go to the gym for about 9 weeks.. with a clean diet, I actually lost more weight and body fat without the gym..

I also try to avoid the weight machines.. stick to free weights and cables

Well, weight machines have their purposes so I wouldn't totally discount them. They are good for newbies who aren't sure of what is the correct form, when you are trying to increase your weights and don't have a spotter, etc. I personally prefer plate-loaded machines such as Hammer Strength. But to asu's point, I try to focus most of my work on the free weights to constantly work on my form & balance and at the end of the day, it is still your core strength that will make you a strong person.

/\ Totally... it is not the machines at the gym... it's your knowledge. you need to check out all these food logs that we all have posted... eat every 2 to 3 hours and YOU HAVE TO EAT CLEAN.... I've been going to the gym since I was 15 (I'm now 25) and nothing shows results like a clean diet... it will be a challenge at first, but give it even a week and you will see it gets easier and becomes a way of life. you have to research, educate & learn what you're putting in your body... break down your food in a journal... review it at night and look where you went wrong... plan meals for the next day...post it here where you can get some EDUCATIONAL feedback...we will help you out...
you made your first good move... joining here! keep learning and you can't go wrong...
what's your stats? bf% height, weight etc....
eat clean!!! :RADAR
;)

Thanks for your advice. I'm 5ft 2 and weigh around 112lbs. My weight usually fluctuates between 110lb when I've been living off salads and 117lbs when I've been eating like a pig and not going to the gym. But I'd say I'm probably about 112 at the moment.

Your weight doesn't sound like you are over weight. Get your BF tested (like the other girls said) & someone will be able to help you with your eating. There is also an excellent sticky called "Shadow's project summarized." You can check there for a basic diet & work-out routine :)
