Elbow joint pain - what to do?

I have a question. I have had persistent, but on- and off pain in my elbows and shoulders, but primarily elbows due to over-training prior to & after my 2nd comp 2 years ago. My suck-ass trainer really pushed drop sets and lots of curls at very exposed angles. As a result if I don't hold my curls in really close to my body & very controlled, I get major elbow pain and that's the end most of my upper body training. Its only at one point on my elbow but its hard to identify where exactly it is.

I've generally referred to this as "tendonitis" because I don't know what else to call it. I got some relief from pain with our friend mr. GH (also helped my aging body :)) I've also been loading MSM & glucosamine, but the problem is still generally there. My question is, if I want to see someone about it get xrays or something to actually see if and how much damage was done during the overtraining days and what I can do about it, who or what would I go see? One friend suggested it was damaged cartilage & to go get an MRI.

Any suggestions? I want to address this problem because it is seriously inhibiting my ability to train "normally". So I don't want to aggravate, but I'd like to be able to fix it.

Is your pain constant or is it primarily during/post workouts?

I would suggest consulting a sports medicine physician in your area. If you are unsure about who to see, consult your family practitioner.

Never, ever, ever let your suck-ass trainer push you past your own physical limits. Only you can decide what is good pain and what is bad pain.

Have you read about ART (Active Release Technique)? I used it with great success for my shoulder injury that would NOT get better despite even laying off training as well as a lower back issue.

At first I kinda snuffed at it -- but it does work.

Thx guys - I'm going to locate a sports orthopedic guy around here and see what happens next. The pain is an on & off thing depending on how regularly I've been in the gym (tuff with my psycho work schedule and the last 3 weeks being sick & getting basically no sleep), but I know what caused it and when it happened and generally what I will do to aggravate it, but I'm not really sure what to call the problem & what routes I have to fix it.

once i got that sort of pain too for making some of the fitness poses without proper warm-up... so my trainer suggested me to make a mix boiled water with salt and apple vinegar. I had to put that in my elbow with a towel to lessen the pain. Then I had to rest for a week for that type of exercise, and the next sessions I had to apply to my elbow prior to training bengae and a bandage or support. It came to be alright and I have no longer experienced that pain... however I had to add some exercises to my arm routine to strenghten the joints.

This is definitely the result of some painful overtraining and has been pretty consistently recurring for the last 2 years with varying degrees of pain depending on the workout, so I'm guessing there's some damage in there...

I'm going to dig up a sports orthopedic person around here to get some input.

When I had my hip injury I saw an orthopedist. Not a good experience at all - told me to, literally, do NOTHING & that, perhaps I just "Can't do olympic lifting. Some people just can't do some things, I can't run, get shin splints no matter what I do." Exactly the type of medical advice you want to be sure to avoid!

He agreed to write a referral for PT (Although he said he didn't really think it would be worth it) & I tracked down a PT who is also a certified athletic trainer - so she wouldn't have that attitude, "Well, you can bathe & dress yourself - you're fine! What do you want her?"

She was really cool & helped me. I'm now volunteering at the clinic & IMX, ALL the therapist are very focused on helping people recover to do whatever they want to do - without drugs & surgery, if possible. The experience of rehab, opportunity for electrical stim or ultrasound, plus advice of a PT could really be beneficial. :)

I have the name of a physical therapist who is a friend of a friend of mine. he is also a personal trainer & avid rollerblader - I'm goign to hit him up before I go digging for an MD.

Physical therapists are a joke, wont help u at all.

Since HS on an off I have had elbow pain, finally went to see an ART specialist with some deep tissue massage and special tools to literally scrape the scar tissue (painful), i finally can train triceps and biceps again with no pain at all, even taking the bar off the bench to do bench press would KILL my elbows, not any more... I used to get pain just brushing my teeth. ART is unreal, my guy is great, we routinely laugh about how little orthopedists and physical therapist's and even trainers know about the body. Sadly its true but most Dr’s are clueless and all they want to do is cut you open and do more damage in the long run. My guy has worked on Milos Sarcev.

He is also working on my carpel tunnel and bad shoulders, all of which have improved dramatically. I have sent almost 10 people to him with problems ranging from a girl who had a car accident to a woman with MS, the girl who had the car accident was all banged up, even her moronic neurologist couldn’t help her, my ART guy has helped her and she actually gets threw the day w/o crying from the pain she has or had.

Look for a local ART guy who can help you.

Also look into prolotherapy.

What dose are you taking the MSM at?? I found it only to be effective if I took large doses... (im 220 lbs) and I take 3 1000mg capsules twice a day (3 in the morning and 3 at night) and within 3 days of this dosing schedule my joint pain was down about 85%... I love the stuff.. make sure you are taking in a enough of it... also the only other thing I can think of to try is to up your water intake..................

I do Orthopaedics for a living as a Physician Assistant. If you want, PM me and let me know where you live and I might be able to refer you to somebody that is good. The choice is yours.

fantom -- yep I load serious MSM. A friend who is a former army boxer & natty bb for the last 10 years - she's got some serious meat on her but has shitty knees. Her solution is to buy MSM powder by the pound from a horse supply place. It has helped, but the wrist pain pops up repeated since the little overtraining experience mentioned above.

Lat - you got PM.
