And to add a study that may back this up....

Influence of repeated consumption of beverages containing sucrose or intense sweeteners on food intake.

Van Wymelbeke V, Beridot-Therond ME, de La Gueronniere V, Fantino M.

Equipe Nutrition et Metabolisme Humain et CREABIO, Universite de Bourgogne, Dijon, France.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of ingestion of beverages with sucrose or with intense sweeteners on food intake (FI) and on hunger ratings in before and after a month of daily consumption of beverages. DESIGN: Experimental study. SETTING: Department of Physiology, University Hospital, Dijon, France. SUBJECTS: In all, 12 men and 12 women, aged 20-25 y. INTERVENTION: Four beverages contained either sucrose (E+:100 g/l, 1672 kJ) or intense sweeteners (E-: null energy content) and were flavoured with either orange (O) or raspberry (R). FI was measured in the lab during two 2-consecutive-day periods, carried out on 2 successive weeks (session 1). The subjects drank 2 l of either E+ or E- beverages on the first day of both weekly periods, according to a balanced randomised design. E+ was paired with O for 50% of subjects and with R for the other 50%. Subjects were then habituated over a 4-week period to both beverages, consuming 1 l of E+ beverage on odd days and 1 l of E- drink on even days. After this period, the measurements of session 1 were repeated (session 2, weeks 7-8). Finally, FI was measured for two more 2-day periods (weeks 9-10) after the association between flavour and energy content was reversed (session 3). RESULTS: The E- drinks were less palatable than the E+ drinks. Besides, we observed that FI was not reduced in response to a liquid extra caloric load and there was no change in hunger ratings after the beverages in any of the sessions. CONCLUSION: Ingestion of caloric beverages induced a positive energy balance and the continuous exposure phase to these beverages over 1 month did not improve FI adaptation in response to the extra energy provided by the beverages.

I had always heard carbonation was rough on your digestion. I never advised when trying to help people cutting for a comp or something, but like another said - everyday life and cutting for a comp are two different things. IMHO - I do think it causes bloat.

The success a person achieved in life after life is over is not measured by the material items, wealth or land they acquire. But in the lives they have touched in a positive way and the people who remember them with a fondness and a smile or a tear that they are no longer.

My wife used it when competition training. I designed her diet for her. Diet soda was of course not part of it.

She asked could she have it, I told her I was against it. She did it anyway, and ended up doing fine. She said it took the "edge" off for her, and was a deterrent to her sweet cravings.

She did fine, I personally would never use it on a comp diet. I guess it depends on the person in the end, but I would say if one can do without it, by all means, eliminiate it.

I used to drink 2 cans a day, on top of 10-15 splendas, couple packs of sf gum, and some sf syrups.....lot of sugar free junk, per se. I always had a "decent six" in good light, but it faded as the da went on....I've cut back severly, first in 3/4's thn in 1/2s......today I'll probable have 2-3 splenda, a few pieces of sf gum, maybe some sf jello and I'm bulking.....just nixed the diet carbonation shit, tripled my h20 consuption and my abd are night and day......plus I feel 200x better........

I normally stick to water, however, water in Germany, by default is "with bubbles" (I learned only last week that if you asked 6-7 years ago for water without bubbles you would get tap water as there was no gas-free bottled water).

anywhoo, that changed, and you can get non-carbonated water now everywhere, though carbonated remains the dafault (try asking for a mineral water at a restaurant, without saying anything else and see what you get).

So, I drink water mostly, ocasionally (probably, 3 times per week or so) I will drink a glass of diet-coke (no caffeine) with a meal

that is it.

I don' think it will make a HUGE difference in the big scheme of things, specially for those who are not supper-ripped, and will definitely recommended if it will make the cravings go away (specially if the cravings, when not satisfied will lead to chocolate, ice cream, cookies, or something else)

I pretty much agree with you. My feelings were totally against it, but after what I saw it did/still does for my wifes "mentality" dieting, I have to say it can be a useful tool.

I think problem arises from personality traits. It is like some folks can eat one piece of candy, and stop. Then others, have this obsession thing where just the taste of one leads to another, and another. These folks I believe it is best to totally abstain.
