Deadlift Grip

Does anyone use that thumb-crushing grip when pulling deads? I'm getting ready for my first meet and I'm more worried about my grip than anything!

If so, do you use both hands over or one over one under?? THANKS!

Do you mean the "hook" grip, index finger over the thumb? If so I use it when going heavy on deads, and I use the mix grip. I also use it on my cleans when i get heavy, of course then I switch to a double over hand.

Grip is a problem for many deadlifters. If you are referring to the same grip Olympic lifters use, I have never seen it used in competition. I have read about grip training and have experimented with lots of ideas. Coan puts a bar on the safety bars on the squat rack and loads it with weight and picks it up with one hand and holds it until he hits failure. It has to be good. Coan is not a tall guy so his hands can't be to big and he is an insanely strong deadlifter.

I also know that using wrist wraps can help and are legal in most competition. I am not talking about lifting straps (duh). I am referring to the wrist wraps used in bench press. If you grab around the lower wrist and squeeze your hand goes into a fist. Use wraps around you lower wrist and it does help secure your grip. That is why many people use wraps in the deadlift.

Good luck.
