Dammit!!! So close....but I missed it - Bench PR

I decided to try for a PR bench of 405 today. After warming up, I went for 385 and got that no problem (not surprising since I can do 375 3 times) then I went for 405. I got it about 3 inches off my chest and then lost it. It didn't really feel all that heavy though. So after a few minutes, I tried again - same result. Shit, that pisses me off. So close, and I know that if I got it past that sticking point I'd have been able to lock it out no problem. I guess it's time to start working the 2 and 3 board presses. Any other suggestions?

Rich I dont know about you but I think a lot of it is a big mental game when it comes to adding that fourth plate on for 405lbs. I remember at the end of last summer I had that goal in mind as well. I put the plates on and felt good. Went 365lbs then went right to 405lbs and missed. I dropped back down to 385lbs and hit it real solid. Put that fourth plate on again, and missed again. For me I think I was psyched out a little. I got so pumped up for that lift that I think I messed myself up! Im sure you will get it next time. Also, now that you are doing WSB I think the speed work and board presses (and floor presses) will have you killing 405lbs in no time.

heavy rows, explode up off the bottom, lower with your lats, do some heavy shoulder presses and plate raises. if you got 385 for 3, i'm pretty confident you can do 405

Yup, yup, yup.

Plus, if it does turn out to a mental block against that fourth plate, some 3 and 4 board presses will help you get used to the feeling of 4 plates in your hands. Won't be such a big deal next time you go for the full bench.

Regardless, those are still good numbers to be pushin'. I got a ways to go to get there.

I actually haven't started WSB yet, I wanted to get 405 first. But I think I'm going to just start it now anyway.

Maybe this will help.

I have learned over time, trial and error to effectively manipulate my mind to never accept a situation in the gym.

Think of the way 135 feels on flat bench. If feels like you can throw it through the ceiling right? Right. T

ake that same mental situation and freeze it in your mind like a saved file.

Before you get under the 405, immediatly go back to that mindset. The 135, I'm about to throw this shit through the roof mindset.

Before you do it, if you use a spotter, when he asks you anything or if you decide to make a last comment before completing the lift say; "nice and easy 135". :)
