behind the neck Military press advice.

I have been doing behind the neck standing military presses and I keep hearing how bad they are for your shoulders. I wanted to get some advice from people here. What’s your take on the situation? Behind the neck military presses isn’t uncomfortable to me. I don’t even have to move my head forward. I can do them and go low till the bar touches my back like I was about to do a high bar squat. Here’s the thing, the front military press is really awkward for me and I can actually do more weigh behind the neck. Should I cut them out? Is the risk of injury super high?

I think that BTN presses are fine as long as they don't hurt you. Just understand that they ARE riskier, so make sure you listen to your body. Why can't you do presses infront of you?

hope you don't mind doing rotor cuff rehab.. that's the fear...

i do them from a seated position, but with 60% max.. in front with 100%

and i start front warm up
rear warm up

then 2 working sets in the front.. but i do 315 so what do i know.. and i'm old.. 48..

This. I can do both front and BTN standing presses with no problems. I do have to use a wider grip on BTN though.

You can always do them prefatigued (eg after chest or after conventional standing press) with slow negatives also.

This should reduce the weight sufficiently to reduce chances of injury

As long as you do them correctly I think its one of the best ways to hit all parts of your shoulder. Front presses just work the front part of your shoulder. BTN standing push presses gave me the most strength and size but standing does leave you open to more injury. I prefer seated nowadays.

i used to do alot of behind neck presses and bradford presses, they give a great burn and I ended up being stronger behind than infront of head also...
