I'm 18, around 182 and I have been training mainly for body building for about 3 years. I was considering to start training for power lifting but I don't really know how to start or even if I would have a chance at meets. Besides westside, what are some good programs I could try to do to get my 3 lifts up? And where can I find out if there will be any upcoming meets held in my area soon so maybe I could watch and get a feel for it?

You're lookin' for something besides Westside. What's wrong with Westside in the first place then? This might sound abrupt but it works for most of us here so why not give it a shot?

Could be lack of equipment......using a gym that wont accept you walking in with boxes, boards, bands etc......waiting until he has read enough to feel confident in using westside.....maybe he doesn't feel confident that he knows his body well enough to use it.

Could be alot of things.....I'm sure he has his reasons.

I have a program i finished not to long ago.. It posted my highest #'s why doing it 1370 total 495sq/515dl/360bp. I would be more then happy to post it for u to look over.

Its not that I have a problem with westside in fact me and my friend have all their videos. I was just wondering if there were any other programs out there.

And olympiclifter, I would like to see the program you tried and maybe give it a shot.

Also I was wondering what I could expect other lifters, my age and weight, to be lifting?? And what #'s would I need to be putting up to be able to be competitive? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to figure out whether power lifting is for me or whether I should just stick with bodybuilding.

bro i'm 17 and i'm gonna tell u what ALL these guys told me before entering my first meet. Whatever numbers you got is more than enough to enter a meet.

I thought I was gonna go into my meet placing last, I know I competed in the teen division and all and there were only 3 teens at the meet I did one being FREAK i knew I was gonna place most 2nd, anyway I walked away with a State deadlift record.

So just get ur butt into a meet and give it hell, check what the records r for your weight class and the fed ur lifting in and see if u can break them even if it's by 1lb but it feels good.

Hey massmonster!

I agree with Cubanito on this one. Get your ass out there and compete, and try and compete regularly. I assure you If you compete often, your training takes on a whole new meaning. Everyting you do is more focused on your next meet. If you have to walk 10 miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill(both ways) yadda yadda yadda, thats what you will do to meet your competitive goals.

Dont worry about what your going to lift either. The cool thing about this sport is almost everybody starts at the bottom and works thier way up. No one other than yourself really cares about what you lift, so show some pride in your personal accomplishments and get out there!

Good luck and have fun!

thanks everyone for all the encouragement. I want to enter a meet but I don't know where to find out if they have any in my area. Where do I look to find this out??

Hey Massmonster. The best place to find meet listings is in Powerlifting USA magazine. WABDL just had a meet in NOLA last month. If I hadnt had so many things going on at the time I would have tried and amde it down for that meet. I jump at any excuse to go to New Orleans!

By the way, where is a good place in town to train when Im down for Mardi Gras. It doesnt have to be hardcore, just preferably someplace with a squat rack and bench. Let me know if there is any place.

If you need anymore help or info, let me know.

Later.
