Hey Aries...

I am dealing with such a similiar situation. Listening to my trainer/nutritionist who is totally well up to date and knowledgeable about nutrition and fitness. And her body shows it too. She tells me to cut she wants me to eat 18 x's bw and only 1 gr of prot per pd of bw and only fibrous carbs and good fats along with that amount of protein. 2 high carb days. Well, I already feel this is so high carb and it is way different from what I am used to.
I was doing another plan but hit a platue. Now she wants me to take her advice but I am scared to go so high carb and little protein. I work out a lot and Im just trying to cut and add lbm. Ahhh! Took a break as well and see wht happens!!

I know what you are saying. Im actually a senior in Dietetics right now and everything I have been taught up to this point has been based on high carbs. The whole protein issue is that women are supposed to be getting .8g P/kg... and 1g/kg if they are active. It doesnt take into account lean body mass and things of that nature. The reason nutritionists are so fixaded on HIGH carbs is that they are your body's source of energy and it is the only form of energy for the brain. The brain can undergo reverse glycolysis if necessary... In the case of contest diets, they work only bc your body has no other choice but to use protein and stored fat for energy if you are very low carb... this being said, high protein diets are EXTREMELY hard on your liver and kidneys b/c excess protein is deaminated via urine in the form of nitrogen. Also, keep in mind that high protein intakes without a calorie deficit will 100% be stored as fat. I guess the reason nutritionists say that carbs(at least GOOD ones) are better than protein is b/c they are cheaper than protein (which most of is urinated out), they help you function and perform better and longer, and also b/c they are your body's source of energy. Regardless of what is taught, the average person would be ok with just following the food guide pyramid and eating as recommended. An athlete/bodybuilder does not fall into this category. Keeping in mind that not all diets and so called "right ways" of eating and training will work for everyone. You have to figure out what works for you and your body. I decided to do a 40c/30p/30f diet and I really like it. The contest diet I did was VERY low in carbs.... like 60-70% protein... with the exception of carb cycling(high and low days). It worked very well for me. I dropped 13% BF in 13 weeks however I felt that I was VERY unhealthy, tired, my mood was really cruddy, and the training was HARD!!!! I also gained some weight back the first week (15-20lbs) which is really unhealthy and I managed to get very sick for almost 3 weeks. Like I said, try and see what works for you! Im focusing on just being healthy and leaning out at a healthy rate so that by the time I want to cut for another show it wont be as drastic and hard.

So figure out your goals, dont be scared to try various diets and training till you find one that is right for you. Just because your nutritionist thinks 18X will help you cut doesnt make it right. It still wont hurt to give it a try for a few weeks. Best of luck!!!

Nailed it ...

My only problem was trying to figure out how many calories I should have according to my stats, goals, and workouts. But...I just did a ton of research and figured it out. It was totally hard for me because I lift, do bikram yoga, and cardio so I couldnt pin point a number to stick by for calories. Come to find out I was not eating even close to enough at 12x's bw. Yikes! More food!

BTW..if you are interested...I found a great page where you put in your lbm, tdee, and activity level and it will show your calorie amounts needed to increase or lose bf. Pretty awesome lay out by Tom Venuto. Good luck Aries!!
