Barbell ROws vs. Using Lever from Floor??

Dirty Workout

New member
I know barbell rows are free weights and that is great and so on but I feel like I get a better burn in back using the lever from floor.

Maybe its the angle that it comes into chest.

Opinions?

The machines can force better form on rows; harder to cheat or get in an incorrect position. Not saying you can't do perfect form on a BB row, but I tend to be slopier on that exercise than I should using free weights...

Austin's right. I can get my back more sore from pulldowns than I can from chins, but I'd rather do chins anyday.

I would NEVER trade barbell rows for anything assisted. I love the lift.

Ditch the lever and grab the barbell bro.

use a lighter weight and focus on pulling the weight up with your lats...not your whole torso and biceps. keep the momentum to a minium and focus on your lats.

you may find that a barbell hits your lats better with rows.

at the top of the movement of the barbell row, pull the bar into your stomach and hold it for a count of 2-3 and really squeeze the shit out of your back...just a suggestion, works for me

yep. a barbell row is alright, but think of the line of pull its more upright. if you do a seated cable row, you pull the handles perpendicular to your body. with a barbell row, depending on how much weight you use, you are never pulling perpendicular to your body. sure, you can overload your muscles with more weight, possibly, but usually the leverage is less and some other muscles come into play. with a tbar or lever from the ground the line of pull is usually in the 45 deg range and your torso is perpendicular to that pull, hence more like a row and not an upright row/shrug. you can also counterbalance by sitting back against the weight.

which is better? neither really. you gain alot of stability with a free bar row, you have alot more control with a tbar row. its a tradeoff. i use both. i like the benefit of control i have in squeezing my shoulder blades together with tbars, i like the feel of controlling the barbell in the motion with barbell rows, though a good squeeze/hold at the top helps.
