Asylum Numbers

Today was ME Bench. We did Reverse Band Presses...with the Blue Bands that I just got. No one had a previous record...so PR's for everyone.

Reverse Band (Blue) Press:

Hannibal:419
Spatts.....287
Project....331

Everyone did well. I managed to tweak my shoulder earlier in the day....and it acted up when I was spotting. Hopefully it is just a "freak" thing...and will go away quickly. Spatts shoulder is healing up...no way do I want to inherit that injury.

Great Job All

You don't think you caught Spatts injury? Sure as beans...everytime my partner got an injury...I was right behind them...lol.

Night Fly's forearm had been bothering her for a while...I go there and within a week mine was too...lol

Now get on line..I have good news for you.

B True

Okie's in town. Did 2 Board Press.

Benchmonster "shirted": 520 (tried 560 and got out of the groove)

Screwball "no shirt":441

Hannibal "shirted":441 (missed 419, came back and got it then said "FUCK IT" and got 441...44lbPR)

BigOkie "no shirt":331 ( I think...and dont know if he got a shirt press down)

Project "no shirt": 265 (22lbPR)

Spatts: 221 (188 was old PR...33lb PR)

Monday was ME SQ/Dl Day. And we did low box squats...kinda. Spatts and Project both did competition style squats...just had the box to catch them if they missed. I on the other hand was stupid enough to do my work on a 9.5" Box....which much to my dismay is WAY THE FUCK DOWN THERE!!

Hannibal: 265 X 3 (at this point both knees sounds like rice krispies, and I knew I just didnt have a Max Effort in me so I called it off)

PS.The Manta Ray SUCKS!

Spatts:
Previous Record from July 6th :265
Today.......................................276 (Hit depth and came up strong)

Project: 265 (Did two seperate singles and then called it a day)

As you can see Spatts kicked our collective asses today. Of course we all knew that 265 she squatted when we tested last time was a fluke. Now we just have to get her squat to keep up with her deadlift...which we all know is STRONG.

What can I say...Project lifted strong as always. Even if I think he cut it short before he needed to. Can't say much I did the same thing. I just knew I didnt have it.

NICE WORK EVERYONE!

However Wed is ME Bench....lets get it on!

nice... and damn a 9.5" box??? i squat on like an 11" inch box, and that puts me below parallel. 9.5 is just tiny.

of course the manta ray sucks!

Well I am around 6'3", and I squat on a 14.5 on DE day. So the 9.5 was LOW. Lower than I should have been working on. Plus the fact that I moved my feet way in also increased the range of motion. Just one of those days where I wanted to see what would happen.

And yeah the manta ray sucks...but it served its purpose. It changed the dynamic of the lift and added variety to training....which is what I wanted.

I need to find a way to use that reverse hyper machine. It could really pull my numbers up alot. Damn thing DIGS into my hips. :(

im 5'7... so you squatting on a 9.5" box would be like me touching my ass to the ground... very impressive.

I have very sharp hip bones that are RIGHT at the surface. That machine leaves me with a blue circle on each side. :(

Perhaps some foam padding. Could pick some up at a craft store. Maybe a little less give...

Today was ME Bench.

Reverse Band (Blue) Press:

Hannibal
Previous Record:419
Today.................441 (463 got started and stalled right in the middle...if I would have stayed tight it should have gone.)

Spatts
Previous Record:287
Today.................309 (Smoked it...no shoulder issues)

Project
Previous Record:331
Today.................353 (22lb PR)

3 For 3...PR's for everyone. Seems like that visit from the Okie Crew was just the thing to get us moving again. Can't wait to train with them again. We followed the Reverse Bands up with the "magic lockout move" that Benchmonster showed us...and everyone used more weight. So the gym is headed in the right direction.

NICE WORK!!

Great lifting. When everyone hits a PR then it's a good day. I can't wait to train with the "A Crew" again. We need to nail down our next training date so everyone can make the necessary arrangements. Later.

Hey spatts-

I remember reading somewhere Dave Tate recommended using an inflatable mattress or air pillow under your hips. I think he said this was to to teach them to keep their midsection tight and keep the work on the correct muscles or some crap, but it might just help with your bruising and have enough give to be effective.

Let me know if you try it.

BTW, is Hannibals RevHyper a wooden or steel unit. As soon as I get my project in the garage back together, I plan on building me one.

Later..

The Real Deal....Steel.

I need Big Okie and Benchmonster to give the final OK on Aug27th. Everyone else is in. Also, midwestJ, we'd like to see you up here sometime too. :)

VDOP may also want the chance to train at the Asylum. The time to set this thing up is now so that everyone has the chance to plan accordingly.

Just sent VDOP a PM....letting him know that he is more than welcome. Bring it on....

Hell-dont laughbecause my momma names and dresses me funny!

I guess I should have chose a shorter name!

Lemme see if I can make it. Thats Sunday right? I have inventory at work FRI and SAT.

Whats the order of the day for lifting if so-ME or DE?

3 For 3 AGAIN...

Today was ME SQ/DL Day. We have changed up our rotation just a bit...rotating every week instead of every two. Hopefully that will help us stay fresh and keep us breaking records.

Chain Suspended (36") Bent Over GM's

Hannibal
Previous Record: 353
Today..................397 (44lbPR)

Project
Previous Record: 265
Today..................309 (44lbPR)

Spatts
Previous Record: 243
Today..................254 (11lbPR)

When Project got his PR on GM's today I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen in my life. And up to that point it was. However, that was before I went for my PR. I have NO IDEA how...but I got it, and somehow managed to do it without killing myself. From my partners' expressions I think I came pretty close though. ME day is supposed to be ugly...and this day was no exception.

Spatts hurt her back on 221. So we were all kinda concerned. But she NEVER quits. Went for her PR and was STRONG. Only problem was her shoulder...the bar started rolling on her. She didnt let it stop her...got her PR...hopefully with some AR the next couple days she will be fine.

After watching her lift though I realized how bad the straight bar is to use for GM's. So I just placed an order for a Safety Squat Bar. So the next time that Chain Suspended GM's come up we will have a new bar that WONT ROLL. It's a much more effective exercise, and it is shoulder friendly. We have done SO MUCH work to get her shoulder healed...not going to let her get reinjured.

GOOD LIFTING!!

Damn, all of you are hitting some serious PR's and frequently. Keep on doing what you're doing because it's working. I'm jealous of the progression. I seem to be at a standstill and my training is inconsistent. Anyhow, congrats on the PR's. Very impressive!

3 FOR 3

Today was ME Bench. And I am happy to say that the gym continue to get stronger. Everyone hit a new PR.

3 Board Press:

Hannibal
Previous Record: 353
Today..................375 (22lb PR)
Then put on my shirt
No Previous Record
Today..................463

Project
Previous Record: 254
Today..................287 (33lb PR)

Spatts
Previous Record: 199
Today..................265 (66lb PR)

Everyone lifted strong today. I managed to strain my bicep Sunday...so I had to nurse it through the workout. Still managed some decent numbers.

Project missed 287 the first time. Came back and got it on the second attempt. Spatts has moved her grip out to decrease shoulder rotation. Taking advantage of her strong lockout. She was taking small 11lb jumps...I finally got tired of loading the bar and told her to put some REAL weight on there. Which she did....and blew her old record away.

NICE LIFTING!

PR's all around, that makes it a good day.

Spatts' 66lbs is damned impressive, and each attempt looked just as strong as the last.

She'll be back to benching more than me in no time. :)

I know today was DE Bench Day, but we did have a couple of rep PR's so I figured I would post them. After speed bench we did Close Grip 4 Board Presses for triples...

Close Grip 4 Board

Hannibal:
Previous Record:309 x 3
Today.................331 x 3

Spatts:
Previous Record:199 x 3
Today.................232 x 3 (No shoulder issues either)

Project:
Previous Record:221 X 3
Today.................254 x 3

NICE WORK!

My Deadlift SUCKS

Today was ME SQ/DL. We did Reverse Band Deadlifts...using the blue bands. The set up was so that the bands let off just above the knee and gave no more assistance. We have never done these before so there are no previous records.

Hannibal: 529 (Missed 551)
Spatts......408
Project.....397

Spatts and Project pulled strong as always. I on the other hand didn't do nearly as well as I had expected. I should be able to pull 550 from the floor without the help of bands. Gotta lot of work to do before December.

For those of you that have never done GM with a Safety Squat Bar you really are missing out on a very effective exercise. The design of the bar really throws you forward and you have to fight it back throughout the movement. I have only used it twice...but I can tell that it is helping with lower back strength and stability. After doing our ME work I did chain suspended gm's with the SS Bar...and worked up to 241 X 6. Then did 285 X 2...it was a STRUGGLE to say the least.

NICE WORK!

Spatts and Hannibal rocked, no question. Me, I dunno. My DL record is 375, and to only get 22 more with the bands was a little surprising.

but hey, we all have our off days.

You did fine, Project. You'll get it next time.

I knew that the secret to reverse band deadlifts was speed off the floor. So I grabbed and yanked...went fine up to where the band stops adding resistance...then it took what was probably 5 seconds (and seemed like 5 minutes) to actually lock the damn thing out. You know what hurt? My pecs!!! I was pulling so hard to lock the f****r out, that my pecs, my neck and my grip were about fried. I believe I said something like, "You're going up bitch..." just as I locked that puppy, and thenI let it fall. I'll be damned if I was going to suffer the negative on that.

Then I skipped the GM's and did ass-to-ankle squats. Last set was 221 x 5.

Followed by overhead/medicine ball/full range situps.

Great lifting.

Don't be discouraged Project. My best ever pull n reverse bands is 495. This is with 135 taken off at the bottom and no assitance the last 4". I have pulled 460 fom the floor with free weights twice and gotten 470 over my knees. This shows that your true max pull can be very close to the band pulls.

KEEP ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN

Today was ME Bench Day. It has been several weeks since we last did them...so we were all expecting lots of PR's. And no one went away dissapointed.

4 Board Press

Hannibal
Previous Record: 375
Today..................419 (tried 441 and my bicep had other ideas)

Spatts
Previous Record: 210
Today..................287 (77lb PR):destroy:

Project
Previous Record: 254
Today..................320 (66lb PR):chesty:

Project and Spatts had 66 and 77lb PR's respectively. Guess I am the slacker...having to settle for a 44lb PR. It's great to see the gym get stronger together. We have all been consistantly breaking records for the past couple months. It's a great feeling to hit the gym and KNOW that you are going to break a record. Success is contagious.

NICE LIFTING!!

It's been a couple months since we've done these, don't remember exactly.

Spatts is kicking ass and taking names here lately! She's hitting some AWESOME PR's.

I was thrilled to break 300 on anything for ME bench. 287 was the closest, up until today, and I got 309 off the boards easy. Went straight up to 331, and could NOT stay tight. It came crashing down onto the boards, and I heard a POP that spatts and Hannibal said was probably my sternum. That was a little unnerving.

Went back for 320, then tried 331 again, same problem.

Still...I'm feeling damned good.

My shoulder has not hurt in over a month. It's finally up to par, and allowing me to lift like I should. I had a month and a half of NO PR's, and even went BACKWARDS on some things. I think it was my CNS telling me to back the f*** off for a while. Then all of a sudden I wasn't tired anymore, and the numbers started flying. The last 3-4 week's numbers have made up for the previous 6.

Just scrolled back through the posts...the last time we did 4 Board Presses was May 29th...so 11 weeks.

They both blew their PR's out of the water. And the gym is "healthy" except for my occasional bicep twinge..so things are headed in the right direction.

Hey Asylum Crew-

You guys(and girl) numbers are looking great.

Do you have any idea what you might be doing different to make your numbers go up? Things have been going through the roof for ya'll lately.

Spatts-I'm wanting to bring my wife with me when we get to gome up if thats cool with your group. I need to get her around another female lifter to try and light a fire under her. Shes got alot in her, but I feel without a female to compete against in our group, she slacks off a little. maybe you can motivate her to step it up.

Hope to get to train with you guys soon.

Later..

Unbelievable, the huge PR's. I would give my right nut to make the gains all of you are making (especially now). Must be that KC barbeque! :D

Spatts-I'm wanting to bring my wife with me when we get to gome up if thats cool with your group.

To be honest I don't know if I can put my finger on it. Things just seem to be clicking. I went back and reworked our training...though it looks much the same as before. On DE Bench day I dropped the percentage as WS has done...that seemed to help with speed. We have started doing JM Presses and lots of band lockout moves. We also have somewhat gotten away from DB Tricep exercises....the bar movements seem to be working better.

As for SQ/DL numbers...I know the reverse hyper has helped me. Once again we dropped the Speed work percentage, and have paid better attention to volume.

My final thought is just the fact that I train with such great partners. There is no doubt in my mind that without them I would not be anywhere near where I am now. It is definitely a team effort...and its nice when we are hitting on all cylinders.

As for bringing your wife to train..she is more than welcome. And training with Spatts as well as Project, as I have said, is a motivational thing in and of itself.

What % on speed work are you using? I have been using 40-45%(no extra band tension) just because my shoulders have been irritated since my last meet. I can move that fast without pain right now, does that sound about right?

1.STRAIGHT WT - (45%)
2.W/2 CHAINS PER SIDE -(40%)
3.W/1 MB DOUBLED-(37.5%)
4.W/2 MB'S DOUBLED-(30,32.5,35%)

These are the percentages that John Bott posted on elitefts, and they have been working well for me.

Well, Im about right now with me percentages. Who knows, maybe with this tenderness in my elbow, the lighter weight will increase my speed. Something good may come out of this yet.

Thanks as always Hannibal.

Later...

Today was DE Bench, but we worked up to a single on CG Lockouts afterwards.

CG Lockouts:

Hannibal:
Previous Record: 397
Today..................408 X 2 (I SUCK AT THESE)

Spatts (aka Lockout QUEEN)
Previous Record: 320
Today..................403 :destroy:

Project
Previous Record: 298
Today..................331

What can I say about the woman. Is there a such thing as a Female Bench Press Specialist? She is something else, and an amazing lifter also ;)

Project and I got our little PR's and then just stood back and let her work. Seriously though it was a good workout for everyone. Hopefully we can get her shirt to work Wednesday and we can see what that lockout can really do.

NICE WORK!!

nice work.

hannibal- i dont think 408 x 2 on any l ift is considered "sucking" ...at least by my standards

spatts- wow, what can i say

project- great job... a 33 lb PR and an extra rep.. i think that speaks for it self

Well I will NEVER make an excuse for my lifting. I did have a bigger range of motion on these, but who gives a fuck. I should have moved more weight than that. Props to Spatts and Project...I gotta get my ass going if I am going to be ready for Sept 14th.

p03t1c...they were rack lockouts...top 4-6" or so.

nice work.

Considering I was benching the bar 5 months ago, you'd think so!

I have no idea what's going on. I was never a bencher, and now it's passing up my SQUAT! Quadzilla is benching more than her squat....it's killing my numbers.

ohh i see...
so 5 months ago we'll say you could lockout 100 lbs... if you were lucky

now you can lock out 408 lbs...

308 lb gain in 5 months... not bad... not bad at all.

Well, it was 309 in May when the thread started. I don't know if we DID CG Lockouts before that. Can't remember. I kind of wonder what my wide grip lockout max is.

Deciever1 said:
none the less, still impressive

Yeah, don't let her fool you. Seeing her in action is even more impressive than reading posts about it.

Deciever1 said:
and one more question...whats with the odd numbers for maxes? do you use KG plates as opposed to LB plates? just curious

Yeah, Hannibal bought the cut-rate plates that were missing a pound or two, so we have to do math all the time.

The upshot is, he has it all memorized, so we just let him deal with it.

Thanks btw...for the record, I got 309 for 2, then 320 for 1, then 331 for 1. After 309 beat me twice, I was glad to get under there and nail it.

Hey, cut-rate plates will make you just as strong. :lmao:

And you are right, though...don't know why we have the boards. I carry around all those numbers in my head. I wasn't out there when you did the 331, and I thought you said you got a double. That's what next time is for.

i hardly ever do these close grip lockouts. the position is very strange to me. i have done them off the pins or at least tried to do them, but each time it just feels wrong. i presume i could be doing something wrong. it's just not a movement we do very often if at all.

FEELIN STUPID...I KNOW I AM

Well it was a good/bad day at the Asylum. We were doing Chain Suspended SS Bar GM's. No previous records.

Chain Suspended SS Bar GM's.

Hannibal:
Today............351 X 2

Project
Today............351 X 1

Unfortunately, Spatts back was FUBAR after the first or second warm up set. So she was not able to continue. We have to figure a way to fix it.

Project and I had a very good Death Match. It took everything I had to get one more rep than him. I tried 373, 3 or 4 times...but could not get it to budge. I feel like that bar was going to cut my head off. But it was a GREAT Battle.

NICE WORK

Deciever1 said:
sounds like a good battle... good job to both of you

Yeah...I was laid out on my back on the gym floor...about to hyperventilate...looked up at Project and said "put some more weight on the f/n bar."

Earlier I had asked him if he was going again...and without blinking an eye he said,"I'm going till I can't go any more."

That's the way ME Day should be. Without pushing one another, we both would have topped out around 300 probably.

thats pretty damn intense.

how high was the bar to start. also did you fix the problem of the bar putting alot of pressure on your neck.

Deciever1 said:

The bar was suspended at 36"

And I emailed Bob Youngs about the bar position. He says there really is no way around it. The only thing you can do is try to get your head up as fast as possible so it doesn't put pressure on the vertebrae. It was ALOT better today. Was still a little sore from Sunday...went a little crazy on Seated Power Cleans...so the GM's were NOT comfortable.

Tonight was a hell of a lot of fun for me, at least. I've not been able to get into a serious death match with Hannibal to this point, and I enjoyed the competition.

After I got 221, we threw more weight on, and I think my comment was, "what the hell, I'm feeling stupid." I think I heard a ,"f***, I've got to go again" come out of Hannibal at one point.

I broke 373 loose, and I swear I was about to pass out. Spatts sat there watching us go back and forth, and I can't imagine what it must've looked like to her.

TheProject said:

Yeah...that was when I was half passed out on the floor. There was NO WAY I was going to let you beat me. They would have had to drag me out of there on a stretcher before I gave up.

Thats what competition is all about...gotta love it.

do you guys ever video tape your workouts? it would be great if you video taped this one, sent it to irish, and every one watched it.

We do tape them. I've got a digital camcorder, and I'll film stuff, and then edit on the PC.

I told spatts on the drive home that the battle would've been great to film.

I'm going to start bringing the cam more often so we can get more footage. Just need a little more tape and a little more hard drive space.

Deciever1 said:
its good to tape them.
Tape all of them, than burn each one to a cd.
That way no HD space is taken up.

Agreed.

The problem is I usually get the footage ripped off to my hard drive, and a full hour of video is about 10GB. I never get it edited and rendered down.

I have our test footage just sitting there, waiting to be worked on.

The plan is to start making some VCD's to share. :D

how much storage do you have? its relatively cheap if you look around...for example, i can get an 80gb hard drive, for 81$ including shipping.. where as most people pay over 200 for it.

and 10gb is a shit load to atke up.. what format is it?
Try to compress it into a wmv file or something.

I've got a 40gb and a 20gb right now. Best Buy had a deal on a 100gb for $99 that I was going to pick up, but they're out. I'm going to do some shopping online to see what I can find.

The reason that the files are 10gb is because I bring in the raw video over firewire and work with it as an uncompressed AVI, then render it down.

The videos I post have no audio track, but are still a decent size and quality, about 1mb for 20 seconds.

irish and i can do more video work than the guys who created toy story. well maybe not but if you need help let me know. and if you want to really get a deal on computers you have to check http://www.slickdeals.net

eventually they will have what you want. check em out.

It was a good run...

Well today was ME Bench day...and for the first time in a quite a while there were NO PR's. For a variety of reasons no records fell today. There's always next time.

2 Board Press:

Hannibal
Previous Record: 353
Today..................353 (Could have continued but have a showdown with the Okies this weekend)
Put on Shirt
Previous Record: 441
Today..................441 (Once again...left a VERY little in the tank)

Spatts
Previous Record: 221
Today..................221 (Forearm Issues)

Project
Previous Record:265
Today.................265

I personally felt pretty strong today, despite the fact that I am sore all over. It was hard for me to "be smart" about it and leave something in the tank for this weekend. I know that I could have at least got a 10lb PR. However, got the Battle at The Dungeon to think abou this weekend. Can't get my ass completely handed to me.

Spatts left forearm is giving her problems. Numbness in her pinky, and tenderness in the forearms. The 403 lockout the other day really made it worse. She's gonna take it easy with the bench stuff for a week or two, and hopefully it will recover quickly.

Project, was just a little sore from our Monday battle, I believe. Couldn't stay tight at the bottom. Some days you have it...we all know he will live to fight another day.

NICE WORK!

Deciever1 said:
hannibal- make sure you get pictures and videos for the big "showdown" we wouldnt want to miss that.

Will make sure that benchmonster gets some good footage. We actually taped some of tonights workout. Nothing too impressive, just have to wait for Project to rip it off of the camera.

I am curious how often you guys(and gal) attemp a previous PR in a new workout? I mean, if I see that my last PR on a lift was 250 lbs, this time around I go right for a small PR, 255-260, then jump up. I notice a lot that you guys hit the same weight as last time. Just curious.

In general that is what we do. But lately we have been blowing away our previous records. So we have to hit the old weight before we make the big jump to the PR. This was the first workout in over a month where we didnt all get a PR of some kind.

We go for a PR everytime we touch the bar. This last post was one out of maybe the last 20 where we made little progress. The two before that reflect a series of 70-80 pounds PR's. I almost never lift the same weight twice in a row...even if it's just 5 pounds.

Ok.

I wasn't trying to say that you guys weren't making progress because it is obvious that you are, it was just something I noticed. I know that since I have started going for that lil 5 lb PR first, I have made better gains. Maybe a confidence boost or whatever, it's been working.

I tend to try for PR of at least 15 Pounds...Luckily (knock on wood) I havent missed yet... I did 2 Board Presses for the first time today and got an easy 365 and then missed at 385... The strange thing is my 3 Board PR was an easy 385 and near miss at 405... But my 4 Board and 5 Board are considerably lower than my 3 board, so I assumed my 2 Board would end up higher than my 3..But not so... Have you guys noticed anything like this...Kinda makes me think I'm closing in on a weak spot in my bench here...

Sounds like you need to get that lockout in order, and your bench should make a significant jump. Easy enough...
