I didn't see anything in the article that indicates erosion of rights. What did catch my atttention, though, is the usual whining from the left about the treatment of suspected terrorists. To the Liberals, kid-glove handling of potential murderers is more important than eradicating the threat. The threat will always be there until this government gets serious about it, and that means quit fucking around with these people and do what needs to be done. Preservation of the rights of terrorists is NOT more important than preservation of our nation.

I'll honestly cry if President Bush doesn't get re-elected.

the trouble begins when you have to define terrorists....

wait until potential terrorists get exposed to this legislation....i'm using the slippery-slope arguement the right wing constantly uses over 'moral' issues

think it won;t happen? ireland used to misuse its anti-terrorist legislation routinely....why won;t the US? frankly the amount of symbolism the US has chosen for its new homeland security agenicies etc thAT bear a resemblance to past facist logo's itsel;f frightens me...which is why i wouldnt vote for bush

Defining terrorists shouldn't be so difficult. There is no evidence so far that this government will or would do any of the things that so frighten everybody. The bottom line is this: keep your nose clean and there won't be a problem. To think that the justice department will run wild arresting and jailing people on every conceivable charge is ridiculous. As long as the Congress does its job, your rights will be protected. Everybody needs to understand that our rights are actually pretty well-defined and are not endless. The confusion and paranoia begin when we confuse rights with the broad freedom from inconvenience that we have enjoyed for so long. Time to grow up kids, and decide what is important. Personally, I'm not willing to get blown up so that someone of Middle-Eastern descent is not made uncomfortable by ethnic profiling at the airport.

Please don't draw a parallel between Ireland and the U.S.--there is absolutely no comparison.

guess I should stay out of the united states,Mr Bush thinks IRA are terrorist and he may detain me for up to 90 days or until I clear their shitty system

Are you saying that the IRA is not a terrorist organization? Just asking.

Excerpt from the U.S. State Department webpage on FTO's.

Q: Why isn't the IRA on the list?

There is a strong body of evidence documenting historic IRA involvement in terrorist activity. This evidence precedes the time, two years ago, when we first considered designating the IRA as an FTO.
At that time, the Secretary of State took note of the IRA's unequivocal cease-fire, as well as the subsequent decision by the British government that the cease-fire was "genuine in word and deed." This permitted Sinn Fein to join inclusive, all-party talks in Belfast.

The peace process in Northern Ireland continues, albeit not without obvious difficulties, and we have again determined that the IRA should not be designated at this time. We are, however, concerned over recent indications of increased terrorist activity in Northern Ireland, and we will continue to monitor closely the activities of all paramilitary groups.

Q: What happens if the IRA carries out another act of terrorism, such as killing a police officer or blowing up a police station?

We will not speculate on hypothetical situations. We expect the IRA to adhere to its responsibility to maintain the cease-fire. Obviously, any resumption of violence by the IRA would have a direct impact on the ongoing review.

I guess I found the answer to my own question. Interesting reading there, by the way.
