John Berardi - the author of the article you mention - does not recommend peanuts because of the potential for allergic reaction (he believes that even people without severe allergies could suffer minor symptoms, and bascially, that it's just not worth the risk). In general, he feels that one ought to avoid consumption of hyper-allergenic foods like peanuts.
In terms of healthy fats, however, peanuts are an excellent food choice and you should feel fine eating them (unless, obviously, that you know youself to be allergic).
As for mixing with apples.....well if you're going to eat apples anyway, adding them with your ANPB won't make much difference. It's the fructose in apples that people tend to shy away from in the first place.
