Alcohol on the atkins

I read in his book that certain drinks arent that bad while on the diet. It didnt throw me out of ketosis but the fat loss has slowed down. Does it do more than just add extra calories?

Some drinks, gin, vodka, and whiskey in particular, don't have any carbs. So, assuming you drink them straight, technically they're not forbidden by Atkins. One or two shots on occasion are ok, but I wouldn't do more than that.

I occasionally indulge in Rum & Diet coke, but can only do it occasionally. It's not an every day thing.

Liquors don't ususally have carbs, but can cause an insulin release. Also, can cause you to start munching on carbs - it's easy to rationalize when you're plastered. : )

A drink or two once a week shouldn't hurt but don't expect to lose as fast.

I posted this link on another thread somewhere here...

www.allaboutbooze.com Look at the bottom for the calorie chart. It gives the carb counts for different drinks. Vodka, gin, rum, tequila, etc have zero carbs, then wine and lite beers. You can mix with diet soda or club soda. Its hard to give up happy hours:)

Also, depends on your metabolism, for me any little thing could throw me out of ketosis, my friend though could eat, drink whatever and still had huge results.

Best of luck..

The thing to remember here, especially if you're doing an Atkins-type diet, is to watch the mixers. That's where you'll get into trouble. Like Sapphire said, stick to diet and club sodas or water.

Alcohol is insulogenic in females, but not males. If you're a female, I would avoid it altogether in the induction phase. Otherwise, be aware that alcohol, even though it has no carbs, stops fat burning dead in it's tracks until your body metabolizes the alcohol. On top of that, alcohol stresses the liver, and on the Atkins diet your liver function is impaired due to lack of glycogen. Personally I would avoid it like the plague (Atkin's AND alcohol).

Thanks guys for the replies.....What would you suggest as a better way of losing weight MS? Maybe you can help me with this question. When I exercise I do it on the treadmill. Walk for 5 min. then alternate running at a sprint (for me anyways) for a minute and then walking for a minute for a total of 25 minutes. When I get through exercising I am totally drained and it last the rest of the day. I am really tired and its like someone drugged me or something. I have read here that taking in more fat will help in energy. I dont know. Thanks for the reply on the alcohol thing. RD
