my brother is 14 years old i would like to get him into weight training, is he too young? if not could someone help me set up a routine for him... we only have a few db and a bench in our basement... i would sign him up to a gym but you have to be at least 18. He is 5'6 150lb dont know the bf but he is a little bit chubby. he is very interested in this hes diet is very clean and he gets up and jogs with me every morning before school. i would set up a rountine my seld but i don't know what would be too much or too little to train for a 14 year old plus would it be better for a 2 or 3 day split or hit every muscle once a week?

thanks

i started when i was 14 on this
day1 chest/tri's/calfs
flat bench 3 sets 6
incline db press 3sets 6
db flys 3 sets 6
close grip bench 3 sets 6
skullcrushers 3 sets of 6
seated calf raises 3 sets of 6
standing calf raises 3 sets of 6

day2 back/bi's
deadlifts 3 sets of 6
bb rows 3 sets of 6
t-bar rows 3 sets of 6
standing bb curls 3 sets of 6
incline db curls 3 sets of 6

day3 legs/shoulders
squats 3 sets of 6
leg press 3 sets of 6
leg curls 5 sets of 6
lunges 3 sets of 6
seated military press 3 sets of 6
arnold press 3 sets fo 6
side laterals 3 sets of 6

that routine worked great for me when i started, there should be a gym around your area where he can train ,just look around, the ymca should let him train

I would say he is able to begin. 14 is the age most highschool football players begin weight lifting. I would keep him to a basic 3x per week program. Make sure he does all his core lifts, bench, squat and deadlift. Just make sure he uses a weight he can handle for at least 8 reps. This range generally ensures, that he will not compress his joints to much when lifting.

You amy want to consider a full body routine for him, since he is just beginning. Maybe something like

Squats
Pull ups (if he can do them, if not lat pulldowns will work.)
Bench Press
Overhead Press
Tricep pressdowns
and
Curls

Start him out w/ 2-3 sets per bodypart, and as I said no less then 8 reps per set.

Get him started now-14 is not too young. It is a great age to teach technique and coordination while enhancing strength.

as long as you dont push him too hard and he doesnt use very heavy weight that he can only just manage, it should be ok.

did you say his diet was very clean?, imo the earlier someone with a genuine interest in weight training learns the importance of a good diet the better, also learning techniques would be very beneficial if taught early

Teach him the basic lifts......... the big 3.... Bench, Squat, and Deadlift. Make those the staple of his workouts...He will need very little assistance exercises if he focuses on these 3 main bulk building exercises..... of course let him do some curls and shoulder and tri work...but not too much..... He is at the age where he is primed for growth....... I wish I knew then about training what I know now......... I'd be a huge mofo.......
