Hello,
Are you of the belief that watching pornography is a perfectly natural and harmless act? Do you think that looking at pictures of nude women has replaced baseball as America's pastime? If so, then you may be one of the millions of men who view pornography on a regular basis - and are perfectly fine doing so. However, new research indicates that watching excessive amounts of pornography (and we are in an epidemic of excessive porn watching) has significant negative effects on your libido, testosterone level, dopamine level and potency.
From a moral standpoint, most people don't see a problem with looking at adult material. And it can certainly be a quick, easy and private way to satisfy your sexual urges - provided nobody walks in on you of course. But unfortunately, morality and pleasuring yourself aren't the only aspects to consider here. This is especially the case for those who masturbate to pornography on a regular basis. If things are not going great in your libido, testosterone level and potency departments, then this article should give you some food for thought for you to explore in order to have a healthier and more fulfilling sex life.
For starters, prolonged pornography exposure creates feelings of mistrust in a marriage or premarital relationship. According to a study by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, fully 56% of divorce cases are attributed to one of the parties having "an obsessive interest in pornographic websites." We can safely assume that a large percentage of premarital relationships end due to these obsessions as well.
Aside from splitting up couples, a porn habit can lead to poor sexual performance. A 2011 Italian study, which polled 28,000 people, revealed that many men suffer from "sexual anorexia," or the loss of appetite for real sexual encounters. The common theme behind this disorder is that pornography addicts become desensitized to physical intimacy since they constantly have access to adult videos and pictures. In some of these cases, men are completely unable to produce and maintain an erection during sex.
Carlo Foresta, head of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine, explained this by saying, "It starts with lower reactions to porn sites, then there is a general drop in libido and in the end it becomes impossible to get an erection." Foresta added, "With proper assistance recovery is possible within a few months."
Okay, so what's the "proper assistance?" Well, you could visit a sex therapist and try to work through the problem. But then again, the average male is too embarrassed to seek this kind of help and discuss their penchant for pornography. Additionally, many men can't afford to pay $100 an hour for sex therapy. If either of these situations describe you, and you're suffering from sexual performance issues related to watching porn, I highly recommend trying the following solutions.
1. Abstain from Masturbation and Pornography
The best way to cure a porn-induced ED problem is to avoid indulging in pornography for several months. Along with this, you also want to abstain from masturbating on a regular basis too. But I recommend ejaculating at least once a week (away from the PC) because, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, doing so lowers your risk of getting prostate cancer.
Preventing yourself from masturbating to porn will "reboot" your brain and help you maintain a healthy sex life. But note that your dopamine will be compelling you to turn on the laptop every time you're aroused. Also be prepared for "sexless" feelings because your libido will plummet if you suddenly stop ejaculating to porn. Assuming you can overcome these problems, your libido will return within 2-6 weeks and your brain will likely reboot within three months.
If you find it extremely difficult to abstain from pornography, which I'm guessing 99% of addicts do, here are a few things that you can to do curb or eliminate the problem:
- Delete saved pornographic pictures and videos from your computer.
- Try only using your PC around other people and don't use it by yourself at night.
- Avoid subconsciously touching yourself while on the computer.
- Log how much time you spend looking up adult material; it may disgust you.
- Consider how your lack of sexual performance is hurting your partner.
- Spend more time exercising, enjoying a hobby or working so that you have less time to masturbate.
- Some even need to go as far as installing software on their PC to prevent access to adult sites - and let someone else set the password!
2. Stop "Edging" during Masturbation and Sex
One way to extend your pleasure during sex or masturbation is to use a technique called orgasm control (a.k.a. edging). With orgasm control, you come close to climaxing without actually doing it so that you don't have to wait through the refractory period, or the recovery phase following ejaculation. This in turn allows you to enjoy more stimulation for a longer period of time, and in some cases, your orgasms will be more powerful.
The downside to edging, though, is that it can make ejaculating during sex far more difficult. If you're used to pleasuring yourself on the PC for an hour or more, then you'll have extreme difficulties in orgasming with a partner. And while I don't recommend that you watch much pornography, try ejaculating as quickly as possible if you continue doing so.
3. Masturbate in a Different Manner
Many chronic pornography users are used to ejaculating the same way every time - hunched over a PC using their right hand, with rapid movement and/or great pressure. Michael A. Perelman, PhD, clinical associate professor of psychiatry, reproductive medicine, and urology at New York's Weill Cornell Medical College, states that this can have disastrous consequences on one's sexual encounters.
"Any man experiencing any sexual dysfunction should ask himself if he's masturbating in ways that produce sensations that differ from those he gets from his partner's hand, mouth, or vagina," says Perelman. "Then he should consider what he could say to her to make the stimulation more similar - and how he could change the way he masturbates to make it feel more similar to what his partner does."
Following Perelman's advice may seem awkward at first, especially for those who've been using the exact same masturbation method for years. But the critical element here is resolving to change your porn and masturbation habits, then doing the work that it takes to get there. I won't lie to you - trying some of these methods will seem exactly like work. However, anybody who wants to transform from a pornography addict into somebody capable of having a healthy, sexual relationship should definitely try the previously discussed suggestions.
4. Try an ED Medication
I'd like to immediately state that using medication is not guaranteed to cure sexual dysfunction. This is even truer if visiting various pornography sites is one of your daily rituals.
Spending years pleasuring yourself to various types of pornography numbs your brain's response to dopamine - a neurochemical that drives desires and addictions. So by the time that you've viewed thousands of adult videos and clips, a real sexual encounter won't be enough to stimulate your dopamine. The aforementioned study by the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine confirmed that continually viewing pornography will cause "gradual but devastating" effects on your love life.
But even so, an erectile dysfunction medication or testosterone booster can produce erections in some porn addicts. An erection begins with dopamine and culminates with an increase in 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels. ED drugs inhibit the breakdown of cGMP, thus allowing this cyclic nucleotide to accumulate in the penis. So if physical intimacy can at least provide minimal dopamine stimulation, the buildup of cGMP in your penis gives you a better chance to produce and maintain an erection.
5. Use a Testosterone Booster
As I just discussed, an ED medication is not always the cure-all solution for those with sexual performance problems. The same reigns true with testosterone boosters, which are not the secret to dopamine stimulation. However, such products can certainly help porn connoisseurs achieve an erection if a severe dopamine deficit is not the culprit.
It's been well established that testosterone plays a big role in enhancing libido. As the American Journal of Medicine reports, studies show that testosterone can facilitate an erection by acting as vasodilator of the penile arterioles and cavernous sinusoids. To put it plainly, increasing testosterone levels is one way to raise your libido away from the computer.
I've actually dedicated a significant amount of time and research to developing my own testosterone booster called Test Stack No.17. Several of the key compounds in Test Stack No.17 promote nitric oxide production, which allows more blood flow delivery to the penis, resulting in bigger, firmer erections. For example. Xanthoparmelia Scabrosa is a key ingredient in Test Stack since it helps increase testosterone and nitric oxide levels. I'll refrain from going on and on about this product, but it also features several other ingredients that work to promote more free testosterone in your body.
