You know, some people are just such assholes.

If you call in sick the day before or after a holiday, you wil not get paid for that holiday or the day before or after. A lot of companies use that policy.

Wow, have never heard of this policy. Not that I'd care, I've probably called in sick once in the past 4 years (major, major hangover), but have never heard of it.

Really? That's standard across most companies. Usually must be scheduled time off or you lose the benefit of the holiday pay. It keeps people from being tools (calling in day before or day after) and also keeps people from resigning the day after a holiday and trying to get paid for it. I've had people try to pull that at least 5 times in a few years.

Yeah, honestly never heard of it. But I've only worked in one industry (but for about 5 different companies), so must just not be the norm in my industry.

So how did it go today? Was it sad? Did people cry? Did you speak to any of the sick-out people when they called in?

LOL @ working for a good reference. In the state of MD the only question a previous employer is allowed to answer is "Was this person 'rehire-able'", or a form of this question. They can not mention anything else about your employment or go in to any detail. Also, most references come from home office HR and not a direct supervisor so the only information they base things off of is whether or not you have been written up constantly.

As a manager and even as a DM for a short time, I wasn't even allowed to field phone calls such as these, they had to be directed to corporate in TX. Pretty pointless system.

There's often a formal and informal reference system.
