Why high reps for legs?

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

But why does everyone do 12-20sets/excercise for legs? Even when trying to grow them, it's not like chest/back etc.. where as you would do 6-8reps to build mass..

Why High reps over low reps to build size to your legs?
or is low reps 6-10 for legs the range for building mass/size for them. ?

Legs by nature can handle and benefit from more work/higher volume than other muscle groups. That's why whe don't walk on our hands. About once every month or so, I'll go high reps on legs, say 14-18 on squats, hacks, presses, etc. However, on regular leg days, the volume is pretty much the same as any other large muscle group.

ditto.

in my opinion you should experiment with both, and see which your body responds better to. though you should also incorporate both and periodization into your workouts. i changed over recently about 4 weeks ago to doing 3 X 5 on squats and then 2 X 5 leg press, 2 X 10 hack squats and my legs are getting much sore and my strength has increased and i like this much more. see which works for your best and which you like best.

Thanks boys. I tried high reps today. All I can say is "WOW" they killed me :)

We'll see how the high reps work for a bit.

Thanks again.

Usually one set per workout i go with high reps. This is usually on squats after my heaviest lift. Today I did one set of 315 for 10 but my next set was 225 for 18 let me just tell you the burn was incredible. I really just like the results i get from the high amount of reps, buyt for strength I go lower rep scheme...

I am with gymtime. Keep your legs guessing and they will grow. Sometimes I just put 3 or 4 plates on the leg press and do 2 sets to asbsolute failure. 40 reps maybe? I dont know, but my legs grow. Last squat workout I came down to 275 for some close stance (narrower than shoulder width) rock bottom squats. Just mix it up and they will have to grow to adapt.

first off heavywear i love the shirt in your avatar and never workout without it

and for the original question id agree with everyone else, mix it up and you will grow, but those high reps do feel great dont they

High reps work better because your leg muscles are distributed with more slow twitch muscle fibers which are good at high endurance activity. The leg muscles have large amounts of myoglobin which increases the oxygen content to the muscles and that is why the leg muscles are more red than say, muscles of the chest.
