Whole new respect for B-fold, Strongmen in general

Had a great workout with Bigokie this past Saturday. We started off with 10 or 12 (lost count) sets of speed squats, working up to 200 lbs of chain in addition to the bar weight. This was bigokie's first experience with chains, but I don't think it will be his last.

I was only one week out from a meet, so I did not go 100% but was able to hit a couple of decent singles after the work sets. Did 405 + 200 lbs of chain off a 13 inch box for my last single, after at least 10 sets of doubles, so I was pretty pleased with that, and had at least another 50 lbs or more left in the tank which pleased me even more.

After speed squats we decided to try log press. (I have a very cool gym, lots of strongman equipment) The log we used was metal, and weighs 175 lbs before you even add any weight to it. Let me tell you, boys and girls, this is so much harder than it looks it ain't even funny. We were both able to do overheads with the log by itself, but an attempt to add 25's stymied us both.

Now, I am a puss, I will admit, but bigokie has cleaned 225 or more in front of me, just goofing around, and is a big strong lad, and he could not get the 225 log either. Pretty humbling stuff.

Then he moved on to some stone lifting. I bailed here, because, as I said, I am a puss, and I also was 6 days out from a meet. Well, bigokie, on like his 3rd try ever with stones, was able to lift a 320 lb stone to 36 inches high. Anyone who has attempted stones knows how insanely difficult this is. It was one of the most impressive gym lifts I have witnessed, and bigokie is very young and is only going to get better and better.

Congrats to bigokie, who is planning his first strongman contest soon, and big respect going out to B-fold. What you guys do is so much harder than what I have been doing, it is not even close.

Bench, what time/where is the OK meet this weekend. I'm not ready to compete, but I may come help out.

Did you Continental Clean the log or did you power clean it? What kind of problems did you have...just pressing it?

A lot of good bench pressers have lots of problems with the log press...and I don't know why that is... Bottom positon, a lot more shoulders, leg drive...not sure really...

I love the stones :)

What is the difference between the continental and power clean?

The continental clean is done where it is rowed to your waist then you squat down and rest the log on the top of your knees...then you put your chest on the log. As you stand up...you roll the log up your body to the top of your chest...

Often people take their belt and make a loop with the extra in the front...or put a towel over it to make a shelf with it...but they ONLY allow that in the amateurs...the Pro's do not.

Power clean goes straight from the floor to shoulders...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's the hand position. With the palms facing, it's just awkward. Or course, it's awkward at first (and second, and third), but after training with the log for a bit, you do get accustom with hand positions, it does get easier.

Yes...you are right. I actually prefer the log now to the bar and I feel that I even get better delt development from it too. It also feels safer on my shoulders!!!!

Here is a clip of me doing 240 x 10 (they didn't count one because I wasn't locked out and in control) from a contest in STL last May. I am on the right with the Sigma Pi shirt on and the black elbow sleeves. You can see how I use my belt as a 'shelf' to help shoot the log up to my shoulders.

I had the biggest problem cleaning it. I tried both a continental and a powerclean. I could not clean the 225 log either way. I had no problem pressing the 175 log and feel very confident I could have pressed the 225 log had I been able to clean it.

Incidentally, I have a hard time cleaning and racking anything, even an olympic bar is a nightmare. I am totally unable to rack the weight, and end up having to just hold the whole weight in my hands, because the bar will not reach my upper chest/collarbone area to rack properly.

And the stone is ugly for me too. Big chest and belly combined with average to short arms is not the best build for lifting stones.

The log shouldn't be that hard at all...did you see the videos I put up? The log should be much easier to rack on your chest than a reglar bar.

You are absolutely right. I am able to rack the log, but can't rack a bar.

I can easily press overhead anything I can clean. But I am so bad at cleans they make my deadlift look like it is a good exercise for me.

I seriously cannot clean 225 with an olympic bar. There are skinny high school football players powercleaning 300+, and it is not uncommon to hear of guys cleaning more than they bench, but I have a Hell of a time with it.
