I'm headed to the gym in a bit. Today is chest day.

Warik is telling me to do dips. First of all, I don't think I can do them.

In any event, it looks to me as if dips work primarily triceps. Am I wrong?

Yes dips work primarly your triceps... But they hit the delts pretty hard too... And the chest... As for me my front delts really hurt, and i mean pain, when i do them...

it depends on the angle at which you lean.
if you lean back (you fall over) and it works your upper back more.
if you lean forward, your chest.
straight up and down is delts and tris.

the hardest is working your hamstrings that way...

I DO DIPS.......JUST DID THEM. I USUALLY FINISH MY CHEST WORKOUT WITH THEM IF I AM DOING TRI'S AFTER.

Been there May.. Dips were a bitch to get for me.
Then, one of the Y's I go to got a Cybex back station that included on of these dip stations that has a bar that you stand on and you can set any amount of weight to counter, or lift up, part of your body weight.
Basically if you weight say 200lbs, set the weight pin at 50 and when you step up then stand on this Bar, it will push up with 50lbs and make it a little easier to do the Dips or Pull ups.

Anyway, the previous posts are correct. Dips can work different parts but most people do them in the fashion to work Tri's.

BTW, I can now do dips and PU at this station without any counterweight after getting comfortable learning them the Puss way... ha.ha.ha...

Does your gym have a dip station that is shaped kinda like a ^ ? If you move to the front where your hands are closer together you will mainly be working tri's, but the wider you make your grip (also lean forward more) will also hit more chest. This way you are doing more of a pressing movement than an arm extension movement.

Hope this helps ya. Don't say you CAN'T do ANYTHING. You can do damn dips May, just work at it and before you know it you'll be knockin thirty out.

HIT IT!!!!!!

mah its not as if ur new to working out, u should be able to crank out a few reps :)

dips are lovely becuase u really work the upper pecs IMHO, i love the burn u get off them, and its great for yer triceps too :)

thanx for the description of the counterweight system too.....i saw an episode of seaquest DSV and this skinny chick was doing them like on 1 finger, at first i was in awe, but then i saw some weights moving up and down and got confused...now i know :)

sorry but leaning forward with a wide grip on a dip station mainly hits your lower chest. it is the best exercise for the lower ches I/M/O.

Dips can be a chest exercise or a triceps exercise depending on your form.

To do dips for your chest (and a very effective chest exercise it is). You'll want to bend your legs so that your thighs are perpendicular to the floor and your calves/shins are parallel to the floor. Make an effort to keep your shoudlers and head forward, and face downwards.

Go down until your upper arm is parallel to the floor, and then push yourself up maintaining the same form. Squeeze your pecs together on the way up and FEEL THE POWER.

Work on getting 3 sets of 8 reps, or 8,6,4 as I suggested in your other post. Once you have weightless dips down, find a dip belt and start loading some iron.

Warik I am impressed! I start every other chest day with either dips or pushups.
